PROJECT ONE: UNIT VARIATION (PART ONE)

Geometric Forms

I categorized these forms into the subheading called “Geometric Forms” based on their aesthetic appearances. These forms have straight crisp folds creating straight lines, edges and corners also known as square. Some are symmetrical shaped where both halves are exactly identical. These geometric forms are cuboid suggesting cube like figures. These structures are simple, clean, almost modern looking.

Abstract Forms

I named this category “Abstract Forms” because these forms are not concrete existing shapes. These forms are created from well-rounded and well-turned folds and twits making them look organic. The cuts in the forms are rough almost like tears. These creations are asymmetrical because they do not have the same shape and size on both sides. These forms have many bents and curved shapes. Their aesthetic appetences are chunky, irregular looking. I think these creations would have an interesting silhouette which is the outside perimeter of the form because there are many rounded arches, peaks and straight corners.

FAILS

Throughout the process of creating there were some creations that were not successful due to their aesthetic appearance and lack of stability to hold its form. However, there were others that were not successful I took them and tried to form them in another way in order to make them successful. If that didn’t work I got another piece of paper and recreated the process and made slight changed to see if it would be successful.

Inspirations

I use Pinterest for inspirations because their post are always innovated, creative and inspiring to create your own by trying, testing, and improving. I searched up paper folding to look at how others fold paper to create an aesthetic look. Also, I found this helpful because it showed me how to make the paper stay firmly by scoring the sheet and making slits in the paper to hold the shape of the design. I have never created something like this however, I find it interesting how one could create something with just a single sheet of paper without using any adhesives. While changing the placement of the creation could also change the form and appearance. Although, there were challenges with this assignment because I found it difficult to create something without any adhesive as certain creations did not hold as I would have liked them to or at all. With the Inspirations that I have gathered I used certain aspects, techniques, and styles to create my own. I found this helpful because it really got my mind thinking of how I could create something even if they weren’t successful.

Poster Concepts

I created multiple poster concepts and ideas in order to try to find a way to create emphasis to specific forms. First I decided to divide my forms into two categories. The first being geometric and the second one abstract to contrast from the different forms. In the last two poster ideas I created two separate areas to divide the two categories. However, I thought how about the ones that embody both categories. Those forms would be placed in the middle but toward the one category they look most alike.

Poster Concepts Part 2

After looking at my poster ideas I wanted to further break down the category by the way they were made. Therefore, I created three categories named folded, rolled, and crumpled. I thought these categories further broke down the forms which was important to disguising how they were made. I created emphasis with my top five forms by increasing their size and adding lines therefore, the viewers eyes go there first and then the rest. I chose the last poster because I thought it was working the best in terms of placement, emphasis, and aesthetic appeal.

PROJECT TWO: PERSONIFICATION

 Stop Motion Concept

Final Stop Motion

My Intent

For this assignment I wanted to start with a blank paper and then start folding it because I wanted the viewer to see how it comes to life. To me it was more appealing and interesting to see what it could formed to. As this was my first time creating a stop motion piece I wanted to change camera angles to make it more dynamic and interesting to the viewer to see multiple side form into shape. I also did this because it I found that one angle didn’t capture some of the movements as well as other angles. I think to further explore this I would try starting with the blank paper and then when it is formed I would break it down to the blank paper so the viewer is able to see all the folds and cuts.

Planar Construction Concept Poster

I chose to place my sculptor on a black background to make it stand out. I chose to shine a light on the piece to create a very strong shadow throughout the piece. In my opinion I think this works well in the middle of the construction where the blue lines hang because I think it makes it look more energetic playing along with the concept of Michelle’s contrasting personality and character. I have chosen a sans-serif typeface because I wanted it to contrast from the construction, I wanted it to be clean.

My Intent

The intent for this planar construction was to design the contrast between Michelle Ji’s personality and character. Personality is what someone displays on the outside. It represents who we seem to be. While, character reveals what you are on the inside, signifying who we actually are. Michelle appears to be very quiet and shy however, as she opens up Michelle is outgoing and sociable. In order to construct this concept, I had to choose a material that represented quiet but could also be transformed to the opposite of that idea. Therefore, I chose paper because it is light, has minimal texture and easy to form. I was inspired by Richard Sweeney and co-artist Andy Singleton who are paper sculptors. I used their folding techniques to construct the white form as this represents Michelle’s personality. The various folds symbolise the layers one must breakdown in order to find her true character, which is the blue form enclosed in the demi sphere. To make this shape more dynamic I painted it blue to further contrast from the white structure. This blue form is made out of curving lines to illustrate this ball of energy awaiting to be seen.

If you cannot read the top blurb as it is a bit blurry for some reason I will rewrite it below ;

FOCUS

The word ‘focus’ could be interpret in many different ways dependent on the one who is analyzing the word. Focus is the centre of interest or activity. Therefore, pick up this installation and look through the letter O. Looking through the letter O will focus on your meaning of the word.

My Intent

My intent was to create something everyone could relate to and interact with. This would be placed in various locations around downtown along with the instructions so people know how to interact with it and tells them the meaning behind this installation. I think this would be a great way for people to stay motivated or for those who have lost their motivation to do something.
