World War 1 is one of the ‘memorable’ events in the 20th century. Thanks to the war, the world was subject to mass destruction at the hands of new military technologies and warfare trenches. However, another significant force in catalyzing this event was the print media. In the same period, the United States’ film industry and commercial advertising were experiencing were receiving recognition. This tool was a major element in driving the war agenda, recruitment process, and war position of the governments. It is unfortunate that governments were allowed to use such a powerful source for incitement as they sacrificed their men to win a war.

The cooperation among Britain, the United States, and Australia benefitted from this advertisement. One of the most striking poster ad is the Australia has promised Britain 50000 more men will you help us keep that promise.

Collectively, the message and the typology used in this ad reveals several aspects of the nature of the World War 1. One is that it reveals the intense cooperation among allies. It is unheard of for a nation to heavily invest its human resource in the business of another state. The cooperation is brought out by the inclusion of British soldiers at the background. The military attires and military weapons used by the black-colored males were used by the British army during the war.

In terms of typology, hierarchy is one of the important elements used to convey the message. In graphical design, this element is the driving element that draws the reader to the important features of a design. In this case, the add utilizes font and typeface size to invite us to read what is most important. The impact of 50,000 and ‘you’ ensured they were designed with the level-one typology for their importance in the course. At the time, men were called upon to stand for their country to win the war. It was hence important for the design to elevate a sense of personal responsibility. Also, the use of different weights as a level-two element made it easy to distinguish the two sections of the text: ‘Australia has promised Britain’ and ‘50, 000 more men will you help us keep the promise’ for easier navigation.

The background features adequately supplement the purpose of the ad. The red background is a consequence of war, that is bloodshed. However, the presence of a kangaroo in an Australian poster elevates the fear of losing your life. According to the Australian culture, a kangaroo is a symbol of moving forward at all times. The animal was so important, that it was involved directly in the war to cheer up the soldiers. The organization of these two elements is splendid. The presence of a red background that represents blood is overshadowed by a vivid kangaroo that is important for the community. Despite the fear caused by the consequence of war, the inclusion of their cultural symbol may have acted as a convincing factor.

Despite the nature of the message in the text, the impression and application of typology elements stand out perfectly. All the elements of the message are organized perfectly in the visual representation. The importance of Australians in this cause was depicted by the kangaroo and its vivid display while their cooperation with Britain was represented by the on-motion soldiers.

BOOK LOOK :The Moon and Sixpence

The book cover I chose came from the novel The Moon and Sixpence by William Maligham that was first published in 1919. The first person narration reveals the internal battle of Charles Strickland who left his family to accomplish his desire for art. My inspiration to adapt this book is the background story behind the title. The title is taken from William’s work Human Bondage where Philip, the novel’s protagonist is ‘busy yearning for the moon that he forgot to consider the sixpence at his feet’. This description is similar to the life and struggles of an architecture student and other creative arts as we try to balance between personal life and our creative space. In most cases, we are son busy to perfect our art and forget to concentrate on our private lives.

 In relation to the setting of the novel, I summarized my message in an ancient typology. The yellow color in the background is a representation of optimism and creativity and how it brings happiness for an artist. However, the use of black upon yellow is a sign of egoism and madness experience internally. The moon is characterized by white ‘spikes’. It shows the internal distress as one craves to have a normal personal life that allows you to experience life. In the middle, is a man who is suffering from the internal conflict in his mind which resolute him to smoke to ease his thoughts. The character is also in thought trying to resolve the dilemma of whether to choose his passion or personal life. The visual image of the man is an expression of a destructive genius who is struggling to be ‘human’.

The Bauhaus Historical Graphics Design

Graphics design is a part of the modern world’s history that you cannot imagine living without. Visual communication is as old as the protracted journey from stone tools to the current digital tablets. The history associated with graphics design spans the entire human existence with the power to inspire and inform present day designers. The historical pattern of the modern era started in about the 1800s until the end of the Second World War. However, the 19thcentury experienced technological advancements fueling competitive innovation.

Staatliches Bauhaus opened its first doors to the public in Weimer, Germany in 1919 with the principle aim of creating Gesamtkunstwerk, a kind of an artistic ideal that synthesizes and encompasses obtainable art forms into a single perfect work. Therefore, it is interesting to note that Bauhaus movement was one of the core driving forces that was popularized by modern styles.  The sequence of graphics design art communication from cave paintings to the current digital wave provides awesome inspiration.

The Bauhaus historical graphics design was characterized by use of abstract art forms, lines, and color in composing existing   presentations that are outside visual reality. Toward the end of the 19th century, Western graphics designers felt the urge of creating innovative art that mirrored on the elemental changes that were taking place through science, technology, and philosophy. The Bauhaus art was founded on logic of perspectives that attempted to recreate illusionary visual realities.

For example one of the most celebrated 20th century graphics designers, Pablo Picasso created cubist paintings that depicted nature as decomposed into solids such as spheres, cubes, and cones. Therefore, the Bauhaus movement became the most influential idea of creating total work of art that included furniture, architecture, interior design, typography, graphics design, and industrial design for the currents in modern design.

Most artists and designers trained by the Bauhaus in Germany had their contributions influencing strongly the contemporary design. Some of the notable Bauhaus artists included Josef Albers known for color research, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy known for photography and illustration, and Herbert Bayer known for typeface designs. Therefore, the purely Bauhaus functional and logical design philosophy forced the Nazi to close the Bauhaus in 1933. However, most of these artists and designers found live unbearable and had to flee to the United States and other European countries.

Modernism was perceived as a revolt to the conservative values of societal realism, since modernist held a firm believe that very new generation need to create on past styles in a way of breaking with the past. Therefore, proponents of the Bauhaus movement and modern graphics design embraced innovation and new technology by rejecting traditional values. However, modernism slowly began infusing with the consumer culture during the late 1960s. The idea of integrating modern art designs with consumerism greatly offered a radical transformation, and perhaps the revolt of tradition made modernism become a tradition in its own way.

Edward Penfield, Stearns bicycles poster, 1896

This poster was designed for the Stearns bicycle Agency in New York by Edward Penfield in 1896. Stearns Bicycles was among the leading bicycle manufacturers, and the poster was meant for advertisement. The poster design is fairly simple and shows that an average individual can ride bicycles manufactured by Stearns (Margolin 56). The choice of displaying a woman riding the bicycle shows a collection of several strengths, as well as weaknesses of both genders. This modest graphic illustration is a perfect and exceptionally rare consciousness of the period between 1890 and 1900, and therefore the yellow Fellow model bicycles by Stearns was highly popular and by extension heavily marketed by the manufacturer (Margolin 56).

The bright colors used in the graphic design shows general happiness derived from riding the popular Stearns Bicycles, which perfectly conforms with the textual “Ride Stearns and be Content” the author of the poster, Edward Penfield was considered as the father of American advertising, and he ensured that the message portrayed by the poster is bold and simple, and has the ability to stand out from a far distance with great intelligibility (Margolin 56). The type face or font used in the text are quite basic and stand out, and the color combination makes it look like riding Stearns Bicycles is an everyday endeavor. However, the woman’s hair in the graphic design and the bike has the same color, which does not augur well that can easily be mistaken that the advertisement is meant for women’s hairstyles (Reed 114).

By applying a critical lens to Penfield graphic design, it reveals the underlying ideology behind the value proposition of the Stearns Bicycle Brand. The emerging modernism and the transatlantic print culture in the period between 1880 and 1940 were characterized by chromolithographs and color that encompasses the promotional goal of the graphic design (Margolin 56). The poster done in the 152by 116 centimeter dimensions was predetermined by the culture, history, as well as the public sphere  through theory, discipline, and methodology  that provides evidence of both visual and textual images are used to interpret meaning.

Considering the perspectives of gender and sexuality, the woman is Caucasian white, possibly a housewife from an affluent family who rides the bicycle with a lot of ease (Reed 114).  The femininity depicted is therefore evidenced by the bicycles design that is specifically meant for female bicycle riders who take pride in riding bicycles for leisure purposes (Margolin 56). Thus the message intended to be portrayed by the designer is clearly illustrated by the graphic design of the poster, as a promotional material. Therefore, the poster is suitable for displays in bedrooms, dormitories, studios, offices, and anywhere where blank walls are not welcomed (Reed 114).  Finally, the poster’s description, ‘Ride a Stearns and be content’ reveals the history of cycling and bicycle riding in Syracuse, New York.
