Well here we are the last week of August, already! Staff and faculty are preparing to welcome our newest students, and welcome back our upper year students, and the campus is bustling!
It’s been a very industrious summer here at OCAD U, with two significant Creative City Campus renovation projects underway. Nearing completion is the update to the Ada Slaight Drawing & Painting Studios on MCA Level 4.
The update include adding new lighting, new AV and controls throughout the spaces. There will also be new furniture and equipment in all the studios and the build shop, to improve circulation and workflow in the studios. A new student hub has been integrated into the Level 4 studios where students can gather, work, conduct critiques and practice installing and displaying work. All of the studios feature new pin-up surfaces, a fresh coat of paint and have been thoroughly cleaned.
We’re about halfway through the renovation project that will realize an entirely new Fabrication Centre, which houses our Metal, Wood, Plastics, and Rapid Prototyping shops, as well as our Tool Loans and Studio Management offices. The new Centre will increase the size of our fabrication studios, add a new consolidated materials purchasing store, and be reorganized along a central corridor that will increase visibility into the studios while also adding more student work and gathering spaces.
Also completed this summer was a huge project to update our heating, ventilation and air conditioning system that supplies the Fabrication Centre and other areas of the school. This involved rerouting some ductwork in the Photography studios, which provided an opportunity to resolve some roof issues for this area.
In the new Fabrication Centre, underslab plumbing and masonry work is underway, along with drywall installation and window/door frame placement. The view down the new corridor is beginning to take shape. The team is finalizing the Assembly Studio, installing new lighting, power and plumbing in preparation for student use in the early fall, ahead of the rest of the Fabrication Centre.
As a reminder, the temporary studio spaces for Metal, Wood, Rapid Prototyping, Plastics, Tool Loans and the Studio Management office are all posted on the Creative City Campus website, as well as information about these spaces can be found in the Shops & Studios section of the main site.
We look forward to having you here this fall! If you have any questions about these projects, don’t hesitate to reach out to the team at firstname.lastname@example.org.
