“I’m Kaeti MacNeil and I’m a fourth-year Drawing & Painting: Expanded Animation (DPXA) student living in Toronto.

I like to create surrealist paintings and stop-motion animations. I’m interested in visualizing the invisible qualities of human life. I’m currently working on my Capstone film: Self Portrait in nth Dimensions, a surrealist single-channel film that combines acrylic-painted stop-motion sequences, still oil paintings, and an original music score. I paint from my intuition, and draw inspiration from cognitive science, theoretical physics, and cubism. From the vantage point of a higher dimension, the viewer and I explore the nature of time and one’s relation to it. We see vignettes of an abstract super-reality where the subtle phenomena of memory, sensation and imagination become visible, feeling bodies.

I work with Dragonframe for stop-motion painting, Toon Boom Harmony for digital hand-drawn animation, and I’m still beginning in sound design and vocal recording. I want to continue developing these skills and expand into any other skills as I need. I have a vision in my mind’s eye of how I want the films to look, feel and sound, so I work to better create them to share with others.

I expect remote work will continue in a post-COVID-19 world. Many technological innovations have been created to help connect people in real-time during the pandemic. I expect we’ll continue to use these, even though it cannot replace the connection and clarity that we experience in person. This could change the way I work, in that collaborating remotely with multiple teams becomes an easier possibility. I look forward to graduating and moving on to what’s next!”
