Language Learning Support for ESL Students

February 27th, 2012 · No Comments · General Posts

The Writing & Learning Centre recognizes that ESL students experience particular challenges at university and can sometimes benefit from specialized supports and resources. ESL students are welcome to access all general WLC services, but we also encourage them to take advantage of the ESL Mini Series, a program designed especially for OCAD U ESL student needs. While regular tutoring sessions focus on a current assignment or general writing or learning concerns, the Mini Series provides students with an opportunity to “step back” from their assignments and work specifically on English language skills development.

There are two Mini Series – Grammar and Vocabulary – and each is comprised of three working sessions. The Grammar Mini Series focuses on identifying the student’s most common grammar errors and finding strategies to correct them in their writing. The Vocabulary Mini Series helps students learn to research new words so they can use them accurately in their writing. Both series focus on developing skills that are transferrable across their coursework.

The Mini Series are delivered by our ESL specialists, Rebecca Smollett and Fiona Inglis. To book a Mini Series, students can call 416-977-6000 ext. 229, or email, or drop by in person.  We are located at 113 McCaul Street, on Level Five, in Room 1510.
