CONCEPT

The “Connecting Jacket” is a relationship detector that could indicate the relationship between people. And it helps people to create connections with others in the real world. The jacket uses several types of heat-sensitive fabrics that react to different temperature ranges, which display various colours when the temperature reaches the ranges. When people near a person that often contact, the microcontroller receives the signal from others, and it will control the temperature to a specific range, so the heat-sensitive fabric will reveal red colours. When people near a person that sometimes contact, the heat-sensitive fabric will reveal the yellow colour. When the fabric show green colour, it indicates that people meet someone that has contact information but did not contact for a while. This is design for everyone.

OBJECTIVE

The inspiration of the “Connecting Jacket” is trying to connect people together. During the pandemic, people start to lose the physical connection with friends or colleagues. Although people could meet each other online, it will not give me the sense of connecting in reality. I feel more disconnected from the world after the meeting. One of the problems is that while people are wearing face masks, it is not easy to recognize others on street. Therefore, the changing of the colours on the jacket could help people to find out that their friends are nearby. Being able to connect with others in real life are really necessary to fulfill social needs. Wearing a jacket and face mask, people could find their friends and communicate safely.

DESIGN

Location

The microcontroller, the signal sender, and the signal receiver will locate at the inner side of the jacket. The temperature-sensitive fabric will be sewed on the outer side of the jacket. There will be using conductive fabric to connect. The heating metal wire locates at the inner side of the temperature-sensitive fabric.

img_1447img_1450

How to activated

It will be activated by opening the microcontroller, the signal sender, and the signal receiver first. With the origin state, it should be the white colour of all the temperature-sensitive fabric. To change the colour of the fabric, people need to meet a person that has contact information. And the whole system will work and the heating metal wire will work. After the temperature reaches the range, the colour of the temperature-sensitive fabric will change.

Interaction and States

To have interaction with the jacket see the states of different situations, you have to wear it and meet people.

  • When you meet someone that you have the contact information, but you haven’t talked in a while, the heating metal wire will be heated to around 40 degrees, the first type of temperature-sensitive fabric will change the colours from white to green.

img_1454img_1456

  • When you meet someone that you have the contact information and sometimes communicate with, the heating metal will be heated to around 45 degrees, the second type of temperature-sensitive fabric will change the colours from white to yellow.

img_1458img_1460

  • When you meet someone that you always stay in contact with, the heating metal will be heated to around 50 degrees, the third type of temperature-sensitive fabric will change the colours from white to red.

img_1451img_1453

When it is rainy, due to safety reasons, the "Connecting Jacket" is not recommended to wear, since it has wires and a battery on the jacket.

  • Generra Hypercolor Shirt
Hypercolor was a line of clothing, mainly T-shirts and shorts, that changed colour with heat.

  • Body Electric
BODY ELECTRIC is a response to our growing dependence on information technology; the garments embody its omnipresent yet intangible nature.

A parallel is draw between the uniform in clothing and technology’s way of homogenizing and flattening. In order to reveal the intimate, the unique, we must look into the screen, through these windows.

The uniform pieces of the collection are inspired by classical workwear items, whose seams, pockets, collars, become the basis of incisions. This dissection of the uniform reveals the expressive self; a hand-embroidered electronic circuit: the fusion of human and computer anatomies.

This intimate garment reveals what hides beneath the skin. Veins and sinuous networks become visible through optic fibres and intricate hand-work. Heart sensors capture the body’s pulse and make it visible to the eye in waves of light, emanating from the embroidery.

Through a fusion of craft, handwork and technology, we are able to see the invisible, and bring to light a new dimension of expression.

Assignment 1: Speculative Wearable – PALCHO

Exploration

img_20210115_221252

Following along with the ideation activity, I made some simple sketches. The goal of these sketches was to come up with ideas that would be exciting to me or inspire me to investigate further. I challenged myself to consider different inputs and outputs, referencing some of the technologies discussed in the intro lecture. The idea that stood out to me was sparked by the prompts poncho, lonely, and write. I was particularly attracted to the idea of a poncho one would use to feel less lonely, so I expanded upon that concept.

img_20210123_141645img_20210123_141707

Concept

Working off of the idea of loneliness, I thought if would work well for a poncho (a big cozy loose garment) to be a piece of clothing that brings comfort. Building off of some of my previous ideations of clothing that glows or changes how it looks based on a certain variable, I thought it would be interesting for that variable to not be related to the wearer, but another wearer (similar to the CuteCircuit hug shirt). How the poncho works, is it would detect the wearer’s current emotion and then send that emotion to the connected poncho. The connected person’s poncho would then light up in a pattern displaying the other person’s sent emotion.

The tech this idea is based on is not entirely new. The hood would have a camera activated by button in the seam. When the button is pressed while the hood is up, the camera takes a picture of the wearer’s face, analyses it using AI, and then sends the chosen emotion to the connected poncho through the internet (this would probably be done by connecting it to a phone). The connected person’s poncho would receive the data on a separate circuit, with acts as the on switch for the LEDs, lighting up in a pattern representing the “pal’s” emotional state. This would stay on for a fixed period of time or until a new emotion is sent.

Objective

Clothing and fashion is a form self expression. Though it has functional elements (keeping oneself warm, public decency, etc.), what clothing one chooses and how they mix and match pieces makes a statement about the person wearing them. I want to expand that expression beyond just the person wearing the clothing to allowing someone they care about to express through their clothing. It would bring the person you choose as your “pal,” whether they be friend, family, or lover, into the lime light. It also would help to close the distance between to people that want to know about how the other is doing. It would be a way to prompt conversation or planing to get together between the two people. And circling back to the idea of loneliness, the poncho would be a way to feel less alone, to feel connected to and directly affected by another living breathing person that you care about.

Speculative Wearable-Victoria Bissell-“Rave Helmet Face Mask”

I designed a custom-molded, full-face mask covered in different coloured LEDs that blink faster or slower depending on the heart rate of the wearer. The front of the piece, the face mask, is thermoplastic, and the back&collar are one piece of highly elastic knit fabric; the mask can just be pulled over the head like a hat.

Unfortunately I couldn’t think of a good way to represent fabric in a paper prototype.

This piece is a fashion item designed for a speculated future in which present-day novelty/statement items have become daily wear. Rather than design a consumer electronic that happens to be worn on the body, I wanted my wearable to be the garment itself.

My objective was to create a completely new article of clothing, which could only exist in a future where wearable electronics are normalized. I also wanted to make something that’s just fun; my goal with all my projects is to entertain people. Finally, this piece is an excuse to use the radiation face mask from my cancer treatment; ever since they gave it to me at the end, I wanted to make it into some kind of wearable.

The interaction is between the speed and intensity of the “light show,” and the heart rate of the wearer. The mask has an on/off button, and the heart rate is divided into 3 ranges which each have their own output. So, the appearance of the wearable matches the pace of the wearer’s activity; for example, if you’re just riding the bus, the lights change colour slowly; if you’re dancing or at a party, they change colour and blink very fast.

Assignment 1 – Speculative Wearable – Octavian Gherghe

Concept:

img_20210118_161531

The wearable I thought about for this project is a headband that is worn to soothe headaches and similar pains. It is relatively simple with two routes for tackling the problem of head pain: a massaging mode that targets two pressure points on the head (the Third Eye and Drilling Bamboo) that are known to alleviate headaches and eye strain; and a second method of diffusing essential oils like lavender oil and peppermint oil. The headband is to be kept simple because it’s not aiming to be a cure-all, more of just an aid for headaches, similar to Advil.

I was thinking of pairing the device with a smartphone / desktop app that would let you control the wearable, as well as offer other remedies and information for headaches that can’t be achieved through the device – like suggested exercise and sleep schedules, water intake, foods / drinks to avoid (like alcohol or meals high in histamine) but I’m not sure how complicated I want it to be, since it’s hard to really nail down an exact science when it comes to curing headaches. I also don’t know anything when it comes to neuroscience, biology, or why body make head hurty.

Objective:

Personally I’ve always struggled with headaches, when I was younger and more so during high school. I really don’t enjoy them and always struggled to get rid of them when they came around. Nowadays I get them when I spend too much time inside or staring at a screen. I also asked my mom for her opinion and she agreed that headaches are a pain (aha) to deal with when working on a computer all day.

I wanted to make a small health-aid that made use of common / accessible remedies without getting too complicated, accessible at convenience stores or drugstores for anyone to grab and use. Originally I also wanted to have a third mode that simulated a cold compress on the user’s head but:

A) it’s really complicated to create a device capable of cooling itself like that, and the alternative to tape a fridge to your head isn’t very useful….                 B) its a lot simpler to just use an actual cold compress! So I cut that out entirely and kept it simple.

I thought about two main designs, one would be a more sleek headband that looks athletic, it would only be bulky in the front where the most electronics would be located: the oil diffuser and the 3 massaging knobs, and there could be several buttons to turn the device on / off and to choose what function of the device you want to use. The second design was closer to a winter head warmer, where it was larger and fully covered the back of the head. I thought about making it a hat at first, but a lot of the material was unused and it would be a waste in my opinion. Similar to the headband, the meat of the wearable would be at the front, but a control panel could be placed on either side of the head to -again- turn it on and off.

Assignment 1 – Speculative Wearable

Concept
More than 4 billion people need to wear glasses due to impaired vision and other reasons today. However, glasses also cause trouble for the wearer in some aspects, like people who wear glasses in winter will have a fog layer on the glasses after entering the room. Simultaneously, the masks that people must wear due to the Covid-19 will also cause significant inconvenience for those who wear glasses. For me, when I wear a cover on the street, my glasses often mist because the temperature of my exhaled breath is higher than the temperature of the surface of the glasses, and no matter how many times I wipe them, the mist will reappear quickly. That is very inconvenient, especially when it is snowing because the sun sets very early, and I can’t see whether there are steps or obstacles on the road in many places.
On the other hand, in some places where there is no sufficient light source, it is difficult for me to see things clearly, which causes me a lot of trouble. The winter in Toronto is freezing, and few people are willing to expose their hands to the cold air unless they wear gloves. Therefore, I think some lighting equipment that does not need to be hand-held can significantly help people.
After mainly considering the above two points, my wearable device was born. It is a lightweight device that needs to be placed on the glasses frame.

Objective

wechatimg1
My small wearable device should place close to the glasses hinge and screw.
First, there are several mini fans on the side close to the glasses lenses, which can collect heat through electricity, kinetic energy, or solar energy and monitor the lenses’ temperature in real-time through a detector. Gentle warm air will release to ensure that the lens’s surface will not be fogged due to the temperature difference when the lens’s surface temperature differs significantly from the temperature around them.
There will be a small flashlight on the other side of the device. When people need it to start working, they only need to tap it twice to make it work. The flashlight will illuminate the road in front of the wearer, and people don’t need to worry about the light source irritating the eyes because of the angle.
This small device can place on any glasses, including diving goggles and ski goggles. Therefore, this device can also install with positioning and alarm functions ( these two functions are free to choose) to protect the safety of those who go outdoor activities. Simultaneously, some people suffer from serious eye diseases, so the positioning and alarm system can also guarantee their security, and the same applies to the elderly. When people are in an emergency, the things that people wear on their heads are the least likely to fall, so I think the device is very suitable for positioning and alarm functions. When people need to call the police, they only need to press and hold the button under the device for more than six seconds to call the police automatically.
In general, this product serves all people. In addition to wearing glasses, more and more people now like to add beautiful glasses to make themselves more fashionable. Therefore, I also considered the possibility of personalization when designing this device. First of all, this device can divide into three parts after splitting: lighting, mini-fan, and positioning device and alarm system; these parts will be made into a whole, and guests can customize the personalized cover according to their needs.

INSIDE
In my imagination, this device needs to be light enough to make sure people do not feel tired after long wearing it, so I found a metal material called microlattice. Boeing Company discovered the microlattice in 2019. This material is very light (it can even place on dandelions) while also very strong (it can protect an egg falling from the 25th floor from breaking).
This material satisfies my imagination of this device’s interior: it is light enough (like liquid metal feels like), but it has a certain quality (high-quality metal).

wechatimg7-1

COVER
Regarding the device’s appearance, I don’t want it to display in front of people in the traditional way of metal and plastic. I hope that this device’s appearance can be customized, and different people’s styles determine the use of other materials (like I prefer wood materials).
The phrase “technological products” always reminds people of metal, cold and cool colours. However, technological products can also have a temperature, so animal hair, cloth, and ceramics are also within my consideration.

Speculative Wearable- 3188049

Assignment 1- Speculative Wearable      Jacqueline Lamblot- Grossi 3188049

Cure On The Go

Concept:

My wearable is a compact solution and fix to the everyday pains everyone struggles with! It is a laser therapy system that fits in your bag and is wearable at any time, in any place. It consists of two laser applicators on each end of a wire that connects the two. Different attachments in a variety of sizes come with the product to be used with the applicator for different areas of the body.

Objective:

As a person who lives with chronic neck and back pain, I know I am not alone, and visiting the chiropractor and physiotherapist can get pricy and sometimes hard. Low light laser therapy is something commonly used in these practices. This product makes it simple and easily accessible to help aid in the most common pains.

Where it is located?

The device can be located on any part of the body that the user desires, below are some examples of high pain areas.

img_1154

img_1159

How it is activated?

The device can be activated in two ways. On the back of the right laser is an ON/OFF button. It may also be controlled by the app if the user chooses to use the app along with the device.

The app is a second controller to the device that also allows the user to track their pain and how the system is working to heal the body.

img_1156 img_1155

What does it do when activated

The lasers go through stages of warming up and using their sensors to read where the pain is coming from in order to target the correct area and use the correct strength.

When activated the lasers turn on and work under the user’s skin to reach areas of pain and aid in the comfort and healing of the muscle. They are able to use light energy to relax muscles, aid in healing damaged tissues, reduce pain and inflammation, and stimulate nerve regeneration.

screen-shot-2021-01-19-at-3-46-07-pm

There are no visible changes to the device when it is activated. It works under the skin only.

What different “states” does it have?

The different states of the lasers can either be controlled through the iPhone app (setting a timer or the rate at which it works) or by using built-in sensors to study the area beneath the skin. They work controlled by the pain/inflammation, damage, tension, stress, and nerve damage to the area.

If the user has downloaded the app, the lasers collect data of how it was used. This data can later be shared with a doctor, or just used to track pain. The app also has many features for the customer, such as facts about pain and what can be causing pain.

Assignment 1 – Speculative Wearable

Michael Sinn – 3179775

Concept

The concept for this project is a forearm band that you can use to organize small magnetic metal parts, as well as being able to measure objects easily.  The band will have electromagnets embedded within itself that can be controlled with a simple switch. This is where you will be able to place any of the small metallic parts, and have them accessible whenever you need them. In addition to this, the band also has a pair of laser diodes controlled by micro-stepper motors and a distance sensor.  The laser diode, when activated, will display a variable length (controlled by the tuning dial) onto any surface.  Through the use of trigonometry and the distance sensor, the laser diodes can be made to always be projecting the same length onto an object, regardless of how far you are from it.

Objective

The Idea for this wearable came from my own person experiences with building a making different things.  I am always misplacing different screws, screwdriver tips, washers, and other small items.  That’s why I came up with the idea of making a band that goes around your forearm that holds electromagnets.  I decided upon using electromagnets because using regular magnets would always be picking up every little piece of metal that you have across your desk.  The addition of the measurement tool was due to the fact that I never seemed to have calipers or a ruler on hand, and also had issues with measuring the surface area of different objects that don’t have a flat edge on them.

Speculative Wearable: The OPS

Octopus Protecting System (OPS). It is a group of multifunctional modules with octopus-like suckers that allow them to travel on the skin and provide any functions we need. OPS’s modules are managed by a super AI and powered by our body temperature, modules store the energy which body generate and transfer into the energy we need under different situation. The materials of the OPS are biobased and combined like living cells, this material has high ductility and moldability just like slime. These modules can be self-edit by the customers, and they can use the modules anyway they want. The OPS modules can use as a camera holder to bound the cameras on our body and stabilize the lens. They can wrap around the injured part and providing basic medical treatment such as stop bleeding and reducing weight applied to the injured part. These modules have infinite possibilities, they can use as a wallet, goggles, earphones, helmet, body armour…anything one can imagine or cannot imagine.

The OPS is suited for the human species. It designed as an ultimate tool that helps human lives easier, reach higher and dive deeper. When it activates, It can shape into any shape. In inactive mode, it will move around the body like a moving cloth which collects energy the body generates. It reacts directly with human subconsciousness, when we need any functions, they will react faster than we can even notice. The OPS is the most loyal assistant one could ever have.

This idea was inspired by a BBC documentary called “Blue Planet II.” In the fifth episode, a group of ocean scientists filmed how an octopus lives in the ocean jungle. They film how the octopus hunt and use shells protect itself from other predators. This idea is also similar to Iron Man’s nano suit in Avengers: Infinity War. This OPS idea is way beyond what current technology can reach. However, this is what human are born for, to reach our imagination.

Platypus

img_5325_edited

Concept

I was inspired by platypus’s electroreception ability. What is it exactly? Electroreception is the sixth sense of a platypus that gives them the ability to locate objects and avoid collisions in the dark waters by using an electric impulse. They cannot see, smell or hear, and electroreception substitute all of them. I have always thought it is a cool ability to have, to be able to sense where everything is located, so nothing ever goes amiss. I want to create a headpiece that can replicate the ability of the Platypus.

Objective

The objective of this wearable is to “sense” what’s there and can guide the individual what he is surrounded with, and locate items. It can warn you by sensing if there is an object that you are about to come in contact with: furniture, walls, doors, substances, anything. This specifically targets people with vision impairments. With this wearable, they can have an idea of their surroundings and envision their view. As someone who has been affected with very poor vision, it would nice to leave my glasses at home while going out. This can also be useful in terms of shopping, locating the perfect shirt that you never knew existed.

Brainstorming

 platypushat-ideas

I wanted my hat to have a brim because it reminded me of the platypus beak.  I want to make it look fashionable which makes you feel: “Wow, who knew this extreme-looking hat can give me special abilities!” I have an obsession with veils, therefore I incorporated a veil to make it more “me” and also it can symbolize the inability to see. I also thought since this is specifically targeted for people with visual impairments, it wouldn’t matter if their eyes are hidden from the veil.

function

It can be activated the moment you wear it on your head since our body can naturally conduct electricity. The nodes will read the electricity from our body, then transfer it to the sensing component which will allow the individual to enable their sixth sense.  Once it is “activated” by wearing the hat, your mind is able to sense its surrounding, similar to having some sort of superpower. It can then allow you to know the location of the item you are searching for.  There is nothing much to do, besides wearing it on your head and walk without worrying that you’re about to hit a pole. (Real tragic experience)
