Expressive Wearable- Kathy Chau: The Spider Glove

What Are The Spider Gloves?

The Spider Glove is a left hand (right for left handers) glove that show the emotion of disgust. It is a hand extension that helps those who feel uncomfortable under stressful situations. It helps alert others that they feel uncomfortable using red and yellow lights and loud sounds.

How Did This Design Come To Mind?

I wanted to create gloves that represent problems I go through everyday. When I am alone at night, I feel uncomfortable when people surround or approach me. Having a simple light flash on to show that I feel unsafe.  I wanted to show the emotion of disgust or gross things since it is quite opposite of me to do this in my practice. I usually make happy and uplifting things, which got me inspired to turn this assignment into something that I normally do not go for Sound also helps to alert those around us to seek help. If I take this design further, I would prototype an app with contact of security in dangerous situations.

Ideation Sketches

This idea comes from one of my practice ideation sketch session. I found it interesting that I pulled these 3 out in my ideas. I decided to choose a spider because I am quite scared of spiders.

Make Code Prototype

With the prototype of my circuit, I made a simple turn on light for 2 seconds and then turn red, as red is a simple sign of danger. I also added a siren noise on button A which is represented by a star on my glove.

Inspiration

Mimu Glove: These gloves are used to track movements of the fingers. With these movements, you are able to play music with the movement of your hands. I was inspired by this design since it is worn by many with the circuit closed.

The Aesthetic Of Fear: Dorry Hsu

This is a 3d printed resin jewelry piece that covers the face which turns fears into an aesthetic. It looks quite disgusting and gross, but it is a wearable that you are able to express the emotion or feeling of disgust.  This inspired me because of the theme disgust, and how she was able to turn an animal with multiple legs into something pretty.

Samsung Fingers:

The Samsung fingers design allows people to communicate to each other using translator as well as warms your hands up during cold situations. It also has various gestures for you to make a call or text a friend. These gloves inspired me as they are a wearable that could do many things and has various functions. If this prototype does become a project, I would love to create many gloves to sense different emotions.

Final Design:

I couldn’t upload a video of me pressing the button since it exceeds the file limit, but I will present it in person!

Reflection:

During my process, I had a huge problem trying to glue all the parts together, they would fall apart and even in the final I should have used some more stronger glue to stick the pieces together.

My Makecode program was very simple, however I might explore using button B to program the lights instead of carrying around a usb cable since I would love to make the design versatile for everyone to use.

Next Steps:

I would love to be able to push this design further and have an app created just to monitor when we feel uncomfortable and have support services notified when you need help.

I want to program louder sounds so the public will be notified of your feeling.

To make it more sleek and more comfortable, and also sturdy.
