Nihongo mean Japanese in Japanese

Nihongo mean Japanese in Japanese

Hi there, it’s hard for me to talk about myself cause I don’t know where to start. I guess to begin I admire the Japanese way of doing things and their respect for each other. With that said, one of me interests is anime/manga because I just love the style of art and their creativity. The thing that really keeps me going is the Japanese invention of drifting on the mountain passes. This is a driving technique referred as “the art of weight shifting”. This means you basically enter a corner side ways by having the rear wheels break lose from the laws of gravity but yet it is mostly still in the driver’s control. As we all know, gas prices are going through the roof and the earth is warming up so I would do my part by getting a more environmentally friendly car such as the Smart for 2. Yet I still love the thrill of drifting so I want to design the ultimate Smart Car. As a hobby I build Remote Control cars that are 1/10th scale. So far I built one that can go over 100km/h. However, its handling is trying to balance a pencil on your finger. I designed and built some prototype stability control systems and right now I’m working on one that lowers the fail tailing angle and keeps it under control. The way it works (for Rear Wheel Drive cars like Smart) is a clutch drags the outer front wheel during a turn and uses that force on the inner wheel which will counter the pivoting force. I don’t expect most people to understand the thrill of the mountain pass until you experience it first hand.

Also, I like music and play piano, drums and violin but haven’t practiced violin in a long time. Sometimes when I’m bored I compose my own songs or remix a popular song to my liking. Anyways, if you want to know more, just ask me in person. Typing all this is killing my fingers XD

A Good Sense of Humor January 25, 2010

A Good Sense of Humor…

A good sense of humor

In my avatar, you see me wearing a clown hat (to symbolize my clown like qualities) and am driving a red convertible (I just realized that steering wheel is on the wrong side…hmm; ok let’s assume the avatar is taking place in London). I love driving; it is a passion of mine. All the games I play are racing related, except for the occasional Star Craft (Love it!).

In life I am known as a funny person. I make jokes by the hour; it would actually be very rare for me not to joke in a day, even if they are sarcastic, which most of the time they are. In my avatar I wanted to showcase where I got my ‘sarcastic senses’.  As a kid, I grew up watching the Simpson’s (who didn’t?). I love everything about the television show and could probably quote or refer to any episode (probably…). As most of you probably know Homer Simpson is one of the funniest people (err…cartoon characters…) out there. I honestly can’t watch one episode of the Simpsons without laughing at some kind of joke or stunt Homer does or says.

Second to Simpsons is Friends. Even if it is off the air now (boo), reruns still make me laugh. And like the Simpsons I could probably quote any episode. My favorite character is Chandler, with his dry and funny humor. Also in my very cool thought bubble is Archie. I’m a big Archie fan/collector. I know what you’re thinking, ‘When will he choose between Betty and Veronica?’ well I got news for you guys: I’m thinking the same thing. But it’s still fun collecting them and seeing what kind of trouble Archie and the gang get into each time (I said that sentence for laughs only) So that’s a little bit about me and my good sense of humor.

Within a World of Dreams January 25, 2010

I’m Alice and I’m a first year in Material Arts and Design. For as long as I could remember, I have always been facinated by the wilderness, by animals, and by nature. I love the beauty of lights in forests and being surrounded by greenery, and whatever animals may be lurking nearby. I’ve always wanted to have a pet as well, either a cat, a dog, or a snake. Furry animals being harder to take care of, and my love for snakes, I think the first pet I’ll ever have will be a snake. I think they are just beautiful animals.

In my avatar, I’ve meshed together my love for nature and snakes into one picture. In the original photo, I was already holding the snake in my hands (it’s not mine, I got to hold it though..). For the background, I chose a picture of a mystical looking forest scape because I wanted to give the impression that this is still a dream for me. If I could, I would move and live in a forested area, or at least, near a forest. There is another snake coiled onto a tree in the background showing that it is also a part of my dreams.

But as long as I am in my dream world, what I would want the most is to be part of the forest (one with pretty snakes would be nice) as is in the picture.

In my world of dreams...

My name is Jannic Jaeggi and I’m studying Graphic design at OCAD. The avatar I have created for this project is me, blended with the Terminator. This is a representation of my alter ego; in real life I am a procrastinator, not one to accomplish things fast like the Terminator. It is also a darker side of me, for I am generally a peaceful guy.  The background depicts a deserted city; when my alter ego accomplishes something nothing is left unfinished.

Having lived in numerous different places (Switzerland, Australia and Canada), my influences come from wide assortments. It has allowed me to explore different cultures and keep an open mind.

The Confused Warrior January 25, 2010

Live the Revolution!

This is my avatar the confused warrior. You guys may ask, “why a confused warrior?” Well basically he is not sure what his future beholds for him, for example: What problems is he gonna face? Is there gonna be a struggle? etc…etc     But as confused as he is, he’s happy and determined to finish his University education @ OCAD. Anyways that’s the avatar’s life story.

My life story is I am a first year student @ OCAD in Environmental Design, trying to pursue a career in Architecture. My background is Salvadoran, hence the El Salvador Coat of Arms on the sleeve of the avatar, I love the Aztec culture as well as the Roman culture. I placed a roman helmet on my head and the aztec calendar as my shield, I have a sword that shows that I am willing to fight and defend myself against the monstrous OCAD teaching faculty (Just kidding), and to show that I have a Sword collection at home… This is just a quick exerpt about me, if anyone has any questions to ask i’ll gladly answer, so it’s ok to talk to me … I don’t stab!

p.s this was the original photo if you do not understand my face in the picture.

Escape!
Hi everyone!

My name is Magdalena Malik, also known as Megs by friends, and I’m in first year Graphic Design at OCAD. It has been my dream to study at this school since way back! My mom studied here as an Illustrator and graduated. I visited the campus and went to a couple of classes even when I was five years old!  I still remember coloring mickey-mouse picture books during my mother’s lectures…

Even though this journey of art and design has just become, I am eager to find out what the future has in store for me. Hopefully, after graduating from OCAD, I would love to travel and explore the world. I long for the chance to visit unique places, learn about culture and make friendships. As you can see from my avatar, I placed myself in the horizon with a sailors hat and yacht. I adore sailing with my family and friends. The cool breeze makes me feel relaxed and free. Somehow when out there in the water, I feel as if nothing can bring me down. I feel strong. It would be nice to go sailing now, maybe then I wouldn’t be so stressed about course assignment due dates… hehe

I hope everyone learned a little about me!

Looking good in the sun

Whats good everyone?!

I’m Jake, and am currently a first year industrial design student here at OCAD. My Avatar is a comical depiction of myself as my alter ego (A juiced beach bum). Having grown up in Australia and New Zealand, I spent much of my youth on the beach or surrounded by water and I feel this has had a direct impact on who I am today. Although looking nothing like the man displayed in my avatar, my love for having fun, and living life to the fullest is defiantly evident in my personality today.

I have chosen to pursue a career in industrial design because of my love of drawing and my interest in 3D objects and how they function. I am hoping to gather as much as I can from this experience at OCAD and living in toronto and have found much of the work at OCAD so far to be very enjoyable and challenging. I have already met a great group of friends and am excited about the future and were it will take me.

I may just end up back at the BEACH!

Before.

TO CREATE my Avatar I first cut out my head, and and pasted it onto the body of a body builder. I then edited the hue of both my face and the body builder so I looked more tanned. To complete the look I cut and pasted a blow out hair style and a chain neckless, which also helped with the neck join. Finally I cut out the whole thing and pasted in on an image of a beach, feathering the edges so they weren’t so harsh.

“Nothing Left for Me to Do but Dance!” January 25, 2010

can't stop dancing in my head

*The title is a line from the song JUST DANCE by JAMIROQUAI (the Napoleon Dynamite dance)*

My avatar is simple.  I love the stage, and I love dancing, which is why I always think about it.

When people ask me what I’m studying in university, a lot are surprised when I say I’m going into Industrial Design.  I guess it’s because they assumed I would pursue dance as a career since I’ve been dancing all my life.  But, I don’t blame them.  Although my mother always drilled in my head that dancing will only ever be a hobby, she had a lot of moments telling me that I should really pursue it.  But, being the stereotypical Asian mother she is, she would change her mind and tell me I shouldn’t waste my energy on dance (in other words, STUDY).  Even though, in my head, I knew dance was a hobby, deep down, it was more than that; it was an obsession, love, passion, and an escape from reality.  If I had the ability to go back in time, I would.  Even though there were times of regret about a decision I made 4 years ago, I don’t regret it now because with the situations that came up 2 years ago, I know now that regardless of my decision, I would still have been forced to quit dance.

Going to an art/design school to study to become a designer, I’m thankful that my VERY stereotypical mother encouraged me to go into design rather than dying in business.  If I didn’t go to OCAD, I’d probably be sleeping (no joke, I LOVE sleep) in all my lecture classes that go on about the economy, supply and demand, and the recession.  Being in an art school, I still feel a connection to dance because dance is a form of art, and being surrounded by art and design constantly, it’s crazy (and I love it!).  Dance will always be connected to me, whether it’s in my head, or watching it on youtube.  My arms and feet are in constant rhythm with or without music, especially in big open spaces (like the one on the 2nd floor in the main building).  So, don’t be too surprised if I have moments of random movement. =)

Can’t wait to turn to the next page.

Hey everyone! I’m Shaili (that’s pronounced Shelly), and am currently in first year Graphic Design. My avatar is not an alter ego of myself, instead it is a projection of who I am, and what I love to do. Rather, what I’d love to do more of. Travel. Exploring the world, not vacationing, but rather traveling through it brings to light not only all that surrounds me, but allows me to discover who I am in this world. Experiencing different cultures, people, spaces, society, art, and drawing inspiration from them, and at the same time figuring out my identity allows me to achieve a sense of self, which is essential when designing. If I know who I am, than I am able to design for someone else.

Every page turned in this book, furthers me as a designer.

Break an Invisible Wall to See a Visible Future January 24, 2010

A straight punch to the invisible wall in my mind

Hi! My name is Kyungeun (say ‘key-young-un’ really fast); however, I would like you to call me Lisa. I am a very shy and quiet person. I love listening to people’s stories and their thoughts instead of telling mine. Recently, I noticed that I am not so good at articulating my thoughts and expressing my emotions. There are so many thoughts going around in my mind and I think too much before I speak so I always miss my chance to share my thoughts with people. I always admired people who express themselves freely and with confidence. From the experience of having  hard time conveying my thoughts, I learned that ‘expressing’ my opinion is eqaully important as ‘listening’ to the others. However, changing the personality isn’t easy as I thought.  I decided to depict my avatar powerful so she can break the invisible wall that is blocking me from revealing my inner self.  The wall shattered into pieces and it is my turn to escape from an enclosed space and learn to gain confidence in myself.

There is one more thing that I want to give a punch and get over with. I am a design student who hopefully wants to continue my career in design field in the future. I believe to become a successful designer, we should think creatively and imaginatively. However, I still think inside the box. I also want to break the conventional way of thinking and seeing and become more imaginative person. From the experiences that I will be facing in the future, I hope I learn about myself and develop myself.

Before the editing

+ Tools that I used in photoshop: I applied gradation technique that Greg showed us in the class. By adjusting feather with using the marquee tool I could emphasize area that I want give focus. I really enjoyed using different kinds of blending mode for the layers. I also played around with Motion Blur Filter to give an effect of hand punching.
