Light up wig

For all five of my classes my final projects need to be something wearable, with the exception of one. Given my interest in costume design and the like I have decided to have a running theme for all my projects. This theme is Myah Hearth. A fictional character of my own creation from one of my short stories.

For this class’s final I really want to reuse something I already own, an old wig and a beaded mask. My plan is to add LEDs to the wig that will twinkle. The whole function of the piece is purely fashion related. I want it to be eye catching and simple in a sense.

The whole thing would only work if the mask and the wig are worn together. My idea is to mount the Lily Pad to the mask and have conductive fabric contact points on both the wig and the headband of the mask in order to complete the circuit from the mask to the wig.

I am thinking of using up to 9 LEDs Blue and white ones in order to keep with my running theme.

[FINAL PROJECT PROPOSAL] Essence Capsule

Description:

Before, people like to carry pictures of their loved ones around in different forms (necklaces, key chains…). Nowadays with the mass usage of phones, we tend to save the photos in our phones instead. With that being said, sometimes I still see parents keep photos of their kids in their wallets for easier access (v.s having to turn on the phone etc…), which proves that a physical object to remind us about our beloved person is still in need. For my final project I propose to create a digital “box” that contains the “essence” of a person, that user can interact with and carry around (thus wearable). For now I call this project “essence capsule”.

Material/Technical approach:

Despite the fancy word “essence”, in fact, the object will be somehow like a digital photo frame:

..that is wearable with a different way to interact.

Last project with the “wisdom sweater” I worked with audio and sound, in this project I want to try video and improve the interactive experience (+more conceptual content!). I’m expecting to work with LCD display in Arduino. I’m also looking to learn how to make a physical cool “box” that people would actually want to carry/wear around (anticipating a lot of material testing and hand-on prototyping, which I’m not really familiar with).

Week of 23th Nov: Filming footages for displaying in the project, got the footages to run and interact in Arduino

Week of 30th Nov: Build the “box”, test and finalize the code and videos

Guitar shirt

Description: Guitar shirt that plays simple guitar chord sounds when the user give pressure to certain spot on the shirt.

Intended Use: To create a special performance  .To allow the user play the guitar notes on the go.

Required materials:

T-shirt, Touch sensor, micro- speaker, led lights, Lily pad, conductive thread, batteries

Final Project Proposal : Self Awareness

Hey Everyone!

For my final project, I want to explore the concept of self perception. All of us at one point or another have wondered whether our own idea of ourselves is similar to how others view us. I want to investigate this comparison. I also want to find a way to quantify these perceptions and translate them into something tangible.

My first idea, the more complicated, begins with a conversation between two people. When we talk to someone, our voice communicates a certain emotion towards that person. I’m interested in visualizing this communication of emotion from both participants. Ideally, I would record each persons voice, then take that recording and based on the different changes that the voices go through in the conversation, create a visual representation for the participants to see.

My second idea is simpler, but I still feel is very effective. Again, dealing with the voice as a form of expressing ourselves, I want to record the users voice, and as they are speaking, repeat it back to them through an earpiece of some sort. This enables the user to hear their voice as someone else would hear it. Taking from my first idea, I would also like to possibly incorporate the visualization of that voice in some way to give a second form of interpretation.

Lightable Music Belt

My original idea from last week was a moving hat that will change its frequency based on the brightness level. However, I do not find any values of the design therefore I switched my concept to a lightable music belt.

Required material:

Touch sensor, led lights, Lilypad, conductive thread/tape, batteries and a belt

 

Brief schedule:

Since im presenting a week earlier, I only have two weeks to finish the whole project. Therefore, my schedule will be slightly different than every one else.

Week 1:

-Figure out the codes and start prototyping

Week 2:

-Make sure everything works and final design product

Performance Visualizer

Description An accelerometer (housed on a wrist band) sends XYZ axis data to the computer via Bluetooth Shield. On the computer side, Processing application translates received data to a 2D/possible 3D graphic image.

Intended Use To translate one form of art into another. To be used as a training/monitoring tool to measure the quality of a certain performance.

Schedule

Wearable Notifications

PITCH

Traditionally, all interactions and events associated with the phone is constrained within the device itself. More recently there are external outputs like Bluetooth headsets and speakers that can be controlled with things like AirPlay. But what about notifications? We are constantly checking them, turning on the screen multiple times in an hour to check if someone responded to our text messages. Many people feel disconnected when they are not near their phones. Sometimes the phone is in the depths of our bags, in another room or just some place out of reach, which makes it difficult to be CONSTANTLY CONNECTED!

Stop checking. Put your phone down. I want to create a body accessory that will extend phone notifications beyond the smartphone itself. This body accessory will provide both visual (RGB LED) and haptic (vibrator) feedback to the wearer. I chose not to use audible feedback because the wearer may be in a sensitive situation (meetings etc.) where checking their phones is impolite. Since it is close to the body, the haptic feedback will suffice.

The accessory will likely take on a form similar to body-chain jewellery. If well executed, I think wearable technology in this from will look subtle and decorative on top of clothes, but also lightweight and discreet underneath clothes. This will depend on the wearer’s preference.

PLAN

The main goal for my final project is to connect my Android phone to Arduino. In doing so, I hope to explore the different interaction possibilities. To begin, I found a really helpful resource to connect Arduino and Android together by using the Amarino toolkit and following their tutorials.

Then, I will be using IFTTT (If This Then That) to simulate/prototype certain interactions on the Android phone (input), and then output the notifications on to the accessory. This may include:

  • Google Calendar alarms
  • Text notifications
  • Missed calls
  • Social media notifications (Facebook, Twitter)

SCHEDULE

Week 1:  Learn all about the Amarino toolkit, acquire parts, design and finalize the form of the wearable
Week 2: Build, test, get frustrated, build, test, get frustrated, build, test, happy dance when successful
Week 3: Electronic prototype tested and finalized, fabricate and finish wearable, prepare and finish presentation

Other project ambitions probably not achievable within the timeframe:

  • Have the accessory respond to the sensors in the phone (accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, barometer) 
  • Using sensors on the body to send messages to the phone (Arduino to Android)
  • Include audible feedback as well, and have the accessory respond according to the profile settings on the phone (Silent, Vibrate only, Meeting mode etc.)
