Smooshes and Slabs revels in the material properties of clay
subjected to pressure, tension and gravity – forces recorded as
furrows, fissures, stretch marks, tears and bulges in this
seismographic series. Targeting the territory between raw and
refined materials, ceramic forms arranged with industrial items
playfully poke around the periphery of what is soft, what is hard,
what is art; and what is simply lumber.
First trained as an architect, Pamela Nelson is an interdisciplinary
designer with a recent MFA from OCAD University. A native of
Sudbury, Ontario, Pam’s perspective was gouged out of the
apocalyptic rocky landscape of her homeland, leading her, not
surprisingly, to study the structure of sculptural materials and
industrial processes transposed against geological time.
