The Learning Zone

February 21 is the final day to view Lucille Kim’s stop-motion animation/video performance, 1973 – 1979 at  External Space, hosted in the Learning Zone.

Lucille Kim’s art practice involves drawing, video, performance, sound and photography used in the explorations of self, and her Cambodian family history.

Throughout the video, Kim performs coin therapy on her father, a healing technique that relieves aches and pains, and other illness of the body—connecting her to the pain that her father went through when working in Cambodian rice fields between 1973 to 1979, during the Khmer Rouge regime.

…a coin functions as the drawing medium, with the body as its canvas. This technique not only expands the definition of drawing as a practice, but also critically examines our relationship as artists with the subjects we study and portray through drawing.  Alvis Choi

The OCADU Zine Fair is coming up on Wednesday, March 22 and Thursday, March 23. Registration is now open to reserve a table at this year’s fair.

Send your request (including which day you prefer, and if you’d like to table both days if there are enough tables available) to ocadzinelibrary@gmail.com.

Registration will only be available to current OCADU students until March 10. After that date, if there are still spaces left, we will open registration up to the general public.

Tables are free! The zine fair will take place in the lobby of 100 McCaul.

 

 

TEXThibit: A visual display of creative writing by current OCAD University students.

The Learning Zone’s walls have been transformed into pages of poetry and fictional writings. The creative writings are displayed on large format paper, allowing the reader to walk through the work, rather than turning pages.

A reception and reading of work by exhibiting authors and other writers from our community is scheduled for February 28 at 6 pm.

February is Black History Month and in recognition, OCAD U Library and Library Services: The Learning Zone have installed Black History Month books and zines displays in honour of this month—books reflecting A Canadian Perspective as well as diverse collection of zines from a global perspective.

This year OCAD Zine Library Black History Month display features zines that take on issues of identity, activism, race, racism, queers, feminism, black punks and systemic injustice told through personal story telling, poetry and more. The creators of these zines share their cultural history from Caribbean, African and American perspectives.

OCAD U’s Library’s book display, Black History Month: A Canadian Perspective features a collection of books that explore history, identity and art and literature of black Canadians—discovering perspectives from the many diverse voices of Black Canadians. OCAD University will be hosting Black Creators’ Month from January 30th to March 1st. A month of exhibition and programming that explores the multifarious ways of being Black in Canada in 2017.

The exhibition features 28 artists who explore the meaning of Blackness in Canada in the year 2017 through visual culture. Members of OCADU BLXCK ASSOCIATION, Khadijah Morley and Maisha Marshall-Ende curated this exhibition which is being held in multiple locations on campus, including the Main Lobby and Ada Slaight Gallery, 2nd level of 100 McCaul St. and the Open Gallery at 49 McCaul Street. http://bit.ly/2jWMn3m
