OCAD Zine Library has a new zine category!

OCAD Zine Library Multilingual Zine Display

New to the OCAD Zine Library collection, is the zine category Multilingual.

For those who have visited the Learning Zone recently, you would have seen our large Multilingual zine display, promoting this new zine category.

The zine library collection strides towards building a diverse and inclusive collection representing the OCAD U community and beyond.

Since 2007, the zine library collection has expanded to 14 zine categories. In 2012 we developed six new zine categories: FASHION, OCAD U, PERZINES, PHOTOGRAPHY, QUEER, SEX & SEXUALITY.

The Multilingual zines category encompasses all types of zines dealing with a range of issues. You will find subjects on travel, 2014 Hong Kong Occupy Movement, Spanish comics, art, politics, including two Spanish tribute fanzines dedicated to Nicolas Cage. The Multilingual zine category consolidates all of the OCAD Zine Library categories into one.

How did the Multilingual zine category come about? It came from a suggestion from Nikole Mc Gregor, a Learning Zone Student Monitor.

Nikole was performing her zine “shelf reading” maintenance task, and came across a zine written in Spanish. It’s true; we like to keep our zine collection organized, supported by weekly shelf reading. To find a zine written in her first language made Nikole feel good and connected to the zine library collection.

We decided to perform a full search of the zine collection, and identified many more zines that were bilingual or written exclusively in French, German, Portuguese, and Chinese.

Presently we are cataloguing new zines to add to the Multilingual category, which now includes recently donated zines from as far as Hong Kong, Japan and Finland and as close as Toronto’s linguistically diverse communities.

We would love this new zine category to continue to grow, so if you would like to donate multilingual zines to our collection, please mail your donation to:

You can check out the titles for the multilingual zines on our big display at the library’s LibGuide OCAD U Zine Library: Zine Displays. The OCAD Zine Library is also searchable by visiting the online zine library catalogue at Arstor’s Shared Shelf.

A unifying theme of this exhibition is nature in greyscale or minimal colour. Using a palette of black and white or greyscale excluding aspects of colour offers collectively an exploration of nature in terms of visual form and tone.

This exhibition aims to provide students with an opportunity to explore the interpretation and portrayal of ‘nature’ in a new lens—through black and white/greyscale artworks (including artworks with minimal colour). The de-emphasis of colour as the primary artistic medium promotes an examination of the subject matter based on the emphasis of form, design, and values seen in nature, while interpreting the perpetuity of black and white imagery in relation to current developments of the world within a collective context …Kenny Tran & Emily Zou
