And the Winner is….

We are so happy to announce that winner of the People’s Choice Award for the Mega Quarry Poster Show is Evelynne Malangyaon!

Evelynne’s poster, along with the other winners from the Mega Quarry Poster show (Best Poster winners Joanna Lu, Anton Mwewa, Man Yan Ashley Yip and Honourable Mentions Elvis Shao, Zhi Gao, Paul Bernier and Lauren Livingston) will be exhibited this weekend in The View From Here: Artists Against the Mega-Quarry Show & Sale in Honeywood, ON.

About the exhibit: Artists Against the Mega-Quarry is fighting the Highland Companies application to turn 2,300 acres of Ontario’s best farmland into the second-largest open-pit mine in North America. Our pieces are shown and sold in support of a broader effort to stop the proposed mega-quarry.

Mega Quarry Poster Show Opening

Last Wednesday, March 28th, the Learning Zone hosted the Opening Reception for the Mega Quarry Poster Show; activists’ posters created by the first year graphic design students of Linda Montgomery’s Drawing and Translation class. Highlights of the evening included:

  • interactive installation created by Adam Veroni, which invited audience participation to make a permanent mark on canvas
  • speeches by Dr. Faisal Moola, Director General of the David Suzuki Foundation, Donna Tranquada, and Sandi Wong
  • awards presentation for the best three Mega Quarry Posters including Honorable Mentions

Mega Quarry Poster Show

Currently on exhibition at the Learning Zone are a collection of activists’ posters speaking against the Mega Quarry, designed by the first year graphic design students of Linda Montgomery’s Drawing and Translation class.

For this assignment, the students take on social and environmental accountability as young designers, driving change through their poster designs for the Mega Quarry Campaign.

The Opening Reception, held on Wednesday March 28th, 6 – 9 pm. was well attended with guest speakers Donna Tranquada, formerly of CBC Radio and Dr. Faisal Moola, Director General of the David Suzuki Foundation, Ontario and Canada’s North.

Awards for the best three Mega Quarry posters were presented to Joanna Lu, Anton Mwewa and Man Yan Ashley Yip. Honorable mentions were presented to Elvis Shao, Zhi Gao, Paul Bernier and Lauren Livingston. Congratulations to all students.
