Every Object Has a Story is a partnership publication between the Royal Ontario Museum and The Walrus Foundation in celebration of the ROM’s 100th anniversary.  An exciting part of this book is the inclusion of student photographers from Humber College, OCAD University, Ryerson University & Sheridan College who were selected to create works of art in response to artifacts from the ROM’s collection.  From the Photography Department, I’d like to congratulate: Marvin Antonio, Sebastian Benitez, Genevieve Blais, David Clark, Christine Mclean, & Raymond Salaber on their contributions to this book.

Pick up your copy of this beautiful publication at the ROM, through the Walrus Foundation’s web store, and in other major bookstores.

Rogers M-School: Paid Summer Internships

The program will run five days a week, on a full-time basis, from Monday, May 4, 2015 to Friday, August 28, 2015. The internships are based in Toronto and Montreal and are paid an honorarium of $1800 per month completed.

Interns may be placed in the following areas: Editorial, Sales/Marketing, Design, Videography/Photography & Production Operations/Digital Publishing (Additional detail for other sections are available on their website)

Videography/Photography Internship
You will work closely with our in-house photographer/videographer and assist with shoots and research. You’ll also coordinate the photo studio. Ability to edit video using Adobe Premiere is an asset. Interns must have their own equipment and experience using it. Local travel is required.

What you need to be considered:

  • Must be currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of a post-secondary program
  • A strong interest in publishing and media
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft applications
  • If you are applying for a design, photo or digital publishing opportunity, strong abilities in InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, HTML, CSS and Dreamweaver are required.

The process: The deadline for applications is Monday, March 16th, 2015, at 5pm. Please complete the online application and attach a resume and an essay of up to 500 words explaining why you would like to be considered for this opportunity. George Whiteside Talks Photography

After graduating OCA in 1979, George Whiteside started his career as an artist regularly showing in galleries across Canada and internationally.  He was a founding member of YYZ gallery in 1979. By 1981 commercial work began taking up the majority of his time, contributing to most major magazines and fashion advertising campaigns in Canada as well as the U.S.  He has also managed to continue to exhibiting personal work from the last 4 decades and in the last 5 years began focusing on fine art.  He is in the permanent collection of the AGO and the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography.

Barbara Astman, Interior & Exterior of the Murano Development, 2010 (OCAD U Faculty)

Our faculty are always up to exciting things!  Barbara Astman‘s public art installation at The Murano building on Bay St (Toronto) is an excellent example of this.  This integrated art and architecture, public art project, incorporates colour photographic imagery on 217 exterior windows surrounding the building.

Bio: Barbara Astman’s work has received national and international recognition. Since the 1970s she has explored a wide range of photographic and mixed media and her work is represented in many museum, corporate, and private collections in Canada, United States, and Europe. Astman has degrees from the Rochester Institute of Technology, School for American Craftsmen, and the Ontario College of Art. Active in the Toronto arts community, Astman has served on numerous boards and advisory committees and she was a Trustee on the Board of Trustees at the Art Gallery of Ontario. From 2009 to 2013, she was an appointed member of the AGO’s Canadian Curatorial Committee.  Some of Astman’s recent photo-based exhibitions include dancing with che: enter through the gift shop, MOCCA (Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art) 2013, inclusion in Light My Fire Part I & II at the Art Gallery of Ontario (2014) and Herland at 60 Wall Gallery in NYC (on display until March 2015).

She is represented by the Corkin Gallery, Toronto.

Congrats to Danika Zandboer (2014 OCAD U grad) for being listed by blogTO as one of the top 10 artists to watch out for in 2015!

Bio: Danika Zandboer is a Toronto-based artist and recent graduate from OCAD U’s photography program. Her work deals primarily with portraiture, the figure and, most recently, the topic of youth subculture. Through an interest in both anthropology and existentialism, her photographs aim to unravel the human subject and the contradictions rooted in concepts of identity. Her process often fluctuates between the uncertainty of analogue methods, the boundlessness of digital technologies, and the tension between the two.

Bio:  Meera Margaret Singh is a visual artist based in Toronto, Canada. She holds a BA in Anthropology (1997), a BFA in Photography (2004) from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg and an MFA (2008) from Concordia University, Montréal, Québec.

Singh has been the recipient of several residencies and awards, including Canada Council for the Arts production/creation grants (2009, 2011), Toronto Arts Council Visual Arts Grant (2010), and an Ontario Arts Council Mid-Career Grant (2011). She has been selected as participant in an artist residency at the Banff Centre; as the McCain Artist-in-Residence at OCAD University  in Toronto; as the summer resident at the Centre for Innovation in Culture and the Arts in Canada in Kamloops, British Columbia; as a scholarship winner and participant in the Magnum Workshop with international photographer Alessandra Sanguinetti; as a selected artist in an international residency with German photographer Thomas Struth at the Atlantic Centre for the Arts in Florida. Her work has been included in numerous exhibitions and festivals throughout Canada and the United States. She is currently an instructor in the Photography department at OCAD University in Toronto.
