OCAD U Photography Students,
The Instagram account for the Photography Department is doing very well. We are steadily gaining followers since it’s launch just over two months ago. Many of these follower have been art galleries and magazines which is great exposure for you! The concept for this account is to showcase the works of our students and department in an on-line portfolio. It will act as a tool to help promote our students outside the university while also representing the strength of our program. We need your submissions! If we want to keep this account going past April and into the summer we ask that you submit works!!!
Call for submission:
Open to all students in the Photography Department regardless of year or stream. Please submit works!!! (Note: at least one image from every submission will be selected.)
What We Need:
-send us 5 images to select from
-file size 10 by 10 inches at 100 dpi
-file type .jpg
-please caption your images as follows:
Artist Name, Title of work, Year of work, Year of study, @insta username #ocadu_photo
example: Joe Brown, Untitled, 2015, 4th year photo, @joebrown #ocadu_photo
-if your images are landscape or portrait format please adjust the canvas size and include a white border.
-Images should be colour corrected and sized appropriately. We will not make any aesthetic decisions on your behalf.
When Do We Need It?
Deadline for the second round of submissions is Wednesday, April 1st at 5pm. Sooner is better!

Spotlight on Project 31: A live auction in support of OCAD U students

Acting Dean of the Faculty of Art and cutting-edge educator Peter Sramek is directing the auction proceeds from his work to international collaborations for the Photography Department, including student travel.
The Courtyard at the Bargello comes from Sramek’s Italia Panoramica series and was made during his last tenure as Florence Program Coordinator in 2007. This series captures the rich history of the Italian architecture and countryside in black and white. Sramek is Acting Dean in the Faculty of Art and has taught in the Photography program since 1976. His recent work explores photography’s ability to represent sites of cultural history and the ambience of these architectural spaces.

Spotlight on Project 31: A live auction in support of OCAD U students
Active community member and much loved faculty April Hickox is directing the auction proceeds from her work to the Living Laboratory on the Toronto Islands, where OCAD U students work in collaboration to produce site-specific artworks and design solutions while residing at Artscape’s Gibraltar Point.

“Human intervention within a natural landscape is a central theme in my work, I examine issues of site and place within a constructed landscape. Invasive species continue to explore hidden tracts of land that have escaped development.”
Supported by all levels of funding throughout her career, Hickox has exhibited nationally and internationally. She is an active community leader, the founding director of Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography, a founding member of Tenth Muse Studio and a founding member of Artscape. A former Chair of Photography, Hickox is currently an associate professor in the Faculty of Art, and Curatorial Chair for Art with Heart auction for Casey House. Hickox is represented by Katzman Contemporary in Toronto.

Talented artist and supportive alumni Elaine Waisglass is directing the auction proceeds from her work to the Photography program!
“I grew up in a bleak Toronto suburb in a house where the garden consisted of a bit of grass front and back, a skinny maple tree in the front yard and a wire fence. My grandmother, on the other hand, had a very different kind of garden. It had beautiful colours and perfumes, flowers for vases, fruits and vegetables for dinner. To me, that little garden was paradise. From the time I was a very little girl my greatest wish was that one day I would have my own garden just like hers. Many years later my dream came true. The only problem was winter, when there were no flowers at all, only a thick blanket of snow. The solution was to photograph the flowers so I could see them all year round.”

It’s about that time of year where the amount of projects, tests, readings, and papers due escalate and the stress of it all threatens to overwhelm many students.
Here are a few articles on managing stress as a student:
Here are a few things that I have found to be extremely helpful:
1) Writing Lists. It helps to keep you organized and you get an awesome sense of accomplishment when you get to check something off.
2) Sleep. Staying up for an all-nighter of studying or creating or sleeping and doing the work in the morning? Even if you’re not a ‘morning person’, I guarantee this will make you feel much healthier.
3) Time Management. This is the most important thing of all. If you plan your time wisely (lists help with this, make one a day) you won’t have to have those all-nighters! Start planning now, before final critique week hits.

Hugh Martin, “Catacombs #2, Paris”, 2004
Talented artist and much loved OCAD U technician Hugh Martin is directing the auction proceeds from his work to Special Projects in the Photography Program.
“My love of Paris took me underground into the catacombs. I could smell the earthy smell and hear the pebbles beneath my feet as I descended into the passages. I’d read that millions who had died eventually found their resting places in these historic quarries. I wanted to experience the place and to capture it, but I wondered whether I should be taking the photographs at all. As I worked, I felt removed from the factual history of the place, and became entranced by the immediacy of what was before me. Whenever I look at this photograph, I think about my own mortality.”
