Indigenous Visual Culture hosts artist Michael Belmore for its inagural Nigig Visiting Artist Residency @ OCAD U Student Gallery from November 2 -20.

 The Nigig Visiting Artist Residency, hosted by the Indigenous Visual Culture Program at OCAD University, is a new program that provides an opportunity for an Indigenous artist to visit OCAD University for a 3-week period to focus on a short-term project and explore in a collaborative environment, issues impacting their work. The visiting artist will engage and interact with students and faculty in the capacity of mentorship, critique, lecture and a public workshop / demonstration.

The Nigig Visiting Artist Residency supports the dynamism located in Indigenous contemporary art practice and is a tremendous educational opportunity for the artist and students.

The Robert Giard Fellowship: Deadline Nov 15

The Robert Giard Fellowship
Amount: $7,500

Next Deadline: November 15, 2015, 11:59 pm

An annual award named for Robert Giard, a portrait, landscape, and figure photographer whose work often focused on LGBTQ lives and issues, this award is presented to an emerging, early or mid-career artist, from any country, working in photography, photo-based media, video, or moving image, including short-form film or video.  The award now alternates annually between artists working exclusively with still images (photography) and those working with moving images (video or film).  Please make sure to check which medium (still vs. moving image) is eligible for this year’s award cycle, described below*. In either case, this award will support a directed project, one that is new or continuing, that addresses issues of sexuality, gender, or LGBTQ identity.

University affiliation is not necessary. If you are not sure whether you will be eligible for the award, we recommend that you contact us well before the deadline so we can make a determination; otherwise, you may be declared ineligible after the deadline and your application will not be submitted to the committee. This award is adjudicated by the fellowships committee of CLAGSand a jury of the Robert Giard Foundation.

  2. A description of the proposed project (500 – 750 words in length)
  3. Representative examples of their work (work samples)

Final decisions for the awards are made in the spring.

The winner of the fellowship will be asked to participate in CLAGS and Giard Foundation programming the following academic year to present their completed project.

Summer Jobs 2016


The Globe and Mail is looking to hire reporters, editors, photo/digital/video/multimedia specialists and designers for the summer of 2016. These are fully paid jobs and not internships. We are seeking freelance writers and editors, experienced journalists from other organizations, recent graduates or students in their graduating year.

The Globe and Mail has won more national journalism awards than any of its Canadian competitors, has been honoured internationally for its world-class website, and has captured two Emmys for video projects, so we need the best journalists to cover for our regular staff when they go on summer vacation.

Even though these jobs are just for the summer, the program is a great way to get your foot in the door at The Globe. We have hired many future senior editors, reporters, photo/digital/video editors, foreign correspondents and columnists through our summer program.

To apply, you must have previous journalism experience, whether at a media organization or through your school’s print or online publications. We want people who have a true passion for journalism, great drive combined with common sense, and an ability to step into and be a full part of Canada’s best news organization.

If you have no journalism or publishing experience, please do not apply; you won’t make it to the interview stage.

Applicants must be legally eligible to work in Canada through to September, 2016.

The deadline for applications is Friday, Oct. 30, 2015. Interviews will be conducted in the three-week period after that.

2016 Summer Program Co-chairs

Extended Access: Sat, Oct 24th


OCAD U’s annual Look Inside event will be happening Saturday, Oct 24th from 11am-3pm.  At this open house event, the community, nostalgic alumni, prospective students and all others are welcomed into the school to learn more about what we do here and to mingle with students, faculty & staff.

During this event, the photo production areas will open!  So, if you have a few prints to get to before that upcoming crit or just want to spend some time socializing, plan to be there!

And don’t forget, to get your prints in for the print sale (Friday is the deadline) being organized by students Emily Rourke, Jay Chau, Francis Zhang!

Call for Submissions: OCAD U “Look Inside”

A few students are organizing a print sale on Saturday OCT 24th for the ‘Look Inside’ OCADU open house. This is a call for all photo students years 3 and up to submit prints for sale.

If you would like to submit, please carefully read the process below*:

– Prints muse be dropped off to the Photo Equipment Cage between Tuesday Oct 20th – Friday Oct. 23rd

– Each student may submit 5 – 10 prints to sell

– Prints must be submitted in plastic holders/bags (available at Aboveground Art Supplies) and backed with a piece of card stock/cardboard

– All prints must be compiled in an envelope/folder marked with your name, student number, email and the # of prints you are submitting with their titles (Eg. Jane Doe, Student Number: 2554712, Prints: 5 – Flower Print , 5 – Black and White print.)

– You may also include business cards in your envelope/folder

*Prints may not be larger than 11 x 14 inches, and will be priced according to size as outlined below:
Smaller than 8 x 10 inches : $5
8 x 10 inches: $10
Larger than 8 x 10 inches: $15 or $20 – please mark clearly (if prices on larger prints are not written they will be sold for $15)

Prints will be sold by photo student volunteers on Oct 24th, and leftovers will be held at the PHOTO CAGE until Tuesday October 27th for pickup. Any prints not picked up after this date will be left in the photo finishing room.

You will get to keep all of the $$ from the sale of your prints, and this will be coordinated between myself and the other students organizing the print sale: Emily Rourke, Jay Chau, Francis Zhang, and of course Jenn Long who will be assisting us with the sale.

We are also looking for 3rd years and up to submit some work to display.  There is no theme but space is limited – this is an excellent opportunity to showcase your work to prospective students! The requirements are:

– 3-5 JPEG images (100 dpi)
– Your name, title of work, size and date (Eg. Jane Doe_artworktitle_ 11x17_2015)
– Images cannot be bigger than 11 x 17
– Deadline is Wednesday, October 21st

An exhibition exploring our contemporary understanding of reality from the context of the physical and digital spaces that collectively constitute our world.

Part of the first ART CAMP Residency in collaboration with OCAD U & Ryerson University that took place at the Ryerson Artspace from May – October 2015.  Art Camp brings together 13 students from OCAD U’s Photography department and Ryerson’s School of Image Arts to collaborate on community building and art creation.  The ART CAMP Residency was founded by  Robyn Cumming, Marc Losier & Jennifer Long.

Kotama Bouabane: Coconuts and Selfie Sticks


Photography Faculty & OCAD U alumni Kotama Bouabane
will put a smile on your face with the latest work he completed
during a summer residency at The Banff Centre!

Kotama Bouabane has an MFA in Studio Arts, Photography from Concordia University, Montreal and a AOCAD from OCADU. His work has been exhibited in many galleries including Centre A (Vancouver), Parisian Laundry (Montreal) and Jen Bekman Gallery (New York). He has received many awards and grants and most recently in 2010 the Roloff Beny Foundation Fellowship in Photography. He is represented by Erin Stump Projects and lives and works in Toronto.



The Photography faculty are looking for student volunteers (2nd, 3rd & 4th year) to give input on space planning, community building events and curriculum review.  Volunteers will work with the Associate Chair of Cross-Disciplinary Art Practices and/or Photo faculty committees to provide a student perspective!  This commitment can be minimal (a 2 hr meeting) or longer-term (a monthly meeting).
