The Creation of the Studio Ghibli logo

Studio Ghibli is currently one of the most famous Japanese animation studios in the world. They created movies like Castle in the Sky, My Neighbors Totoro, and Ponyo which became hits all over the world. The studio was founded in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata.  They chose the name Ghibli as it means hot air blowing in the Sahara desert, as Miyazaki is an airplane enthusiast and he wanted to “to create a sensation in the Japanese animation world”

The logo for Studio Ghibli from 1985–1991 created by Hayao Miyazaki. During the this time period no one truly thought that Studio Ghibli would really make it big, however this was before the movie that made their brand was created.

In 1988 My Neighbors Totoro and Firedrop Tomb were made. They soon become highly acclaimed as a literary movies, causing them to gain popularity. Along with the movies, the company started becoming a household name through merchandising, specifically with the Totoro. From bags to stuffed toys the character was loved by everyone.

In the next year the movie Kiki’s Delivery Service came out 2.64 million people came to the theater and became the No.1 hit. This started the companies upward climb of gaining success. In following years every movie that had come out was better than the last. Studio Ghibli’s success, gaining popularity overseas, and winning academy awards,  the company decided to relocate the main building as well as rebrand. In 1991 Hayao Miyazaki remade the logo. It was a blue background with the character Totoro from the film My Neighbor Totoro Another creature is also seen on his head. The Japanese characters “スタジオジブリ作品” are seen on the bottom right, and underneath that is “STUDIO GHIBLI” in Futura, with a line above it. This logo was made in hopes to both appeal to the western and Japanese audience, which it was due to the fact that it was multilingual.

Through out the many years there were two different variants used in different movies and products as you can see above, which were the red and the white backgrounds. Otherwise from 1991 – present the logo hasn’t changed. This has become a universal logo that is recognized in most countries.

Miyazaki had planned on retiring in the year 2016 however he said that  “He has dedicated himself to the production of the short film… facing young staff with CG expression… willingness to take on the feature film production again with the help of young people became uncontrollable”. After three years a new movie coming out this year called How Do You Live? directed by Hayao Miyazaki and animated by Studio Ghibli. The film has an anticipated release before the 2020 Summer Olympics, although the date has yet to be set.
