Introducing the Student Wellness Centre

Student Wellness Centre

OCAD U’s one-stop shop for student accessibility, counselling, sexual violence and health programs and services

The Student Wellness Centre (“Student Wellness” for short) is the new name for the integrated services and programs provided by the former Student Health and Wellness Centre (HWC) and Centre for Students with Disabilities (CSD).

Under this new umbrella are all of the supports students have come to rely on: disability and non-disability related-accommodations, counselling, health services (family physician and psychiatrist), the health and dental insurance plan, peer health educators, crisis support and support and referrals for those who have experienced sexual violence. As a side note, students who opt out of the health and dental plan can still access services at Student Wellness.

There’s more! Student Accessibility Services is the new name for the unit within Student Wellness responsible for facilitating academic accommodations for students with disabilities (the unit formerly known as the CSD.)

The name change is the last step in a two-year process of review and improvement to OCAD U’s services for students with disabilities. Among the many changes we’ve made:

  • Streamlined intake process
  • Smoother referrals from the physician to accommodations
  • An online system (Papyrus) for requesting and retrieving materials in alternate format from the library
  • Greater promotion of the Bursary for Students with Disabilities (BSWD)
  • New exam centre on the 8th floor of 230 Richmond
  • New materials and training for faculty on students requiring disability related accommodations
  • A new Notetaking Program launching this Fall

And there will be more service improvements to come, so stay tuned.

New to OCAD U? Welcome! The Student Wellness Centre is a lively hub of professional staff, practicum students and peer wellness educators all dedicated to supporting students. We have a family physician, psychiatrist, counsellors, accessibility advisors, a nurse, health educators, support workers, peer helpers, and a case manager.
