Thank you for a fantastic Welcome Day!

Welcome Day Fun

This year’s Welcome Day at Orientation was an overwhelming success! Not only were we rewarded with perfect weather — sunshine and blissfully mild mid-20 degree temperatures — we also had an excellent turn out with approximately 800 new students joining in the fun.

This year’s Welcome Day featured a gracious welcome from OCAD U’s Indigenous Advisor/Mentor David General. He gave the traditional Mohawk Thanksgiving Address, Ohen:ton Karihwatehkwen, which translates to ‘That before all else.’ We also heard welcome remarks from our collaborative presenting partners at OCAD Student Union, and OCAD U’s president, Sara Diamond. Special thanks to Arpit Nigam, our Campus Life Assistant, and Brent James, Campus Life Coordinator, who emceed the remarks (and frankly, did most of the heavy lifting to organize our Orientation programming overall).

New this year was the Draw the Line workshop on consent, delivered by David Garzon of White Ribbon. We are pleased to have been able to offer all our incoming first-years this very important education as they embark in their time at OCAD U. We also gave all our attendees a workshop on understanding implicit bias and anti-oppression, courtesy of Pascale Diverlus. Special thanks to OCADSU for organizing these excellent workshops.

We hope everyone enjoyed the day, learned a bit about our services and programs, and got to know some of our neighbours and community supporters. We also hope you enjoyed the 800 cobs of roasted corn, 1500 samosas and 750 pakoras that were served! Thank you to all of our amazing tabling partners, our generous sponsors and supporters, to our 58 peer mentors and volunteers, and the many, many OCAD U staff who contributed to such a warm welcome.
