On Friday, I donned a hard hat and borrowed some safety boots to take a behind-the-scenes tour of our almost finished, brand new Fabrication Centre with Joanne from Campus Planning & Projects!
The contractors are wrapping up the last of their work and the moving trucks were here over the weekend, bringing back furniture and equipment for installation. We can’t tell you how excited we are to have students and faculty back working in these spaces in January. The last several months have been challenging for everyone, but the rewards for your patience are close at hand!
The new studios are gorgeous. It’s hard to believe you can bring so much natural light into our basement-level spaces! You are going to love the new single, connected corridor that opens right into the main lobby and traverses the Centre, the new 3D Printing room for student use, the added meeting rooms, all the new LED lighting and the vastly improved studio layouts. We have new heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC), new dust collection units, better controls and just overall modernization of these spaces, which hadn’t seen an update like this is many decades.
In particular we’re quite excited that a new CNC Waterjet Cutter is on its way to the Rapid Prototyping Centre! This new piece of equipment will cut a wide range of materials, including steel, galvanized metal, stone, glass and plastic.
December is all about our internal teams getting the spaces operational for January. A huge number of staff from many departments, including IT Services, Safety & Security Services, the Technicians and Studio Management, Distribution, Operations and Facilities are all working very hard to have the space up and running in time for the new year.
We sincerely thank everyone involved, and affected, for your patience and hard work in making this monumental project happen. This is a huge milestone of achievement for the Creative City Campus Project, and we could not have done it without our entire community pulling together.
As the holidays approach, we hope that along with completing your final projects, exams and critiques, and enjoy the rest that comes after formal assessments, that you’re getting as excited as we are to see the new spaces!
