Update for Students: May 14, 2020

Hello everyone,

I hope you continue to be safe and well wherever you are at this time. I have a few updates to share with you on the situation at OCAD University as we continue to adapt due to the pandemic and, at the same time, finalize our plans to move forward.


Our first batch of remote delivery spring courses started this week.

OCAD U IT Services has created a brand new landing page of resources for students which includes essential tools for remote learning, tips for optimizing of your home work space and internet connection, how to stay secure online and troubleshoot issues.

Fees for all spring (May-June), summer (June-August) and full-term (May-August) courses are due May 15. Payment methods are outlined on the Tuition & Fees web page. We continue to make adjustments to our fees and payment policies to accommodate for the impact of the COVID-19 situation, as follows:

  • For those unable to pay in full by May 15, interest charges are being waived for the month of June. The first interest will accrue as of July 1. Interest charges will continue to be waived for students with an approved payment plan.
  • Given the uncertainty around when facilities will re-open, the “Student Buildings” fee is not being charged this term.
  • Similarly, Production Materials fees are not being charged.

Please be mindful of the tuition refund schedules, posted here. Because of the shortened nature of the spring and summer terms, the opportunities for tuition refunds is very short.

Some of you have asked about a reduction in tuition fees because courses are being delivered remotely and facilities are not open. The transition to remote delivery of our programs for the spring and summer has not changed the amount we are investing to deliver high quality, engaging learning experiences using the available tools. We are also investing significantly in course design and development, as well as an enhanced version of our learning management system. OCAD U also continues to provide core services that are funded through tuition and other revenue sources. As such, there will be no changes to tuition fees for spring and summer courses.

Finally, a reminder that our Emergency Bursary Fund is still accepting applications. If you are experiencing financial hardship, funds are available to support you with basic needs. A shout out to the OCAD Student Union who contributed $10,000 to augment this fund!


Final grades have now been received and the Office of the Registrar is finalizing all requests to graduate for Spring 2020. President Diamond will be releasing details of the virtual convocation ceremony shortly.

For those of you who prefer to defer your participation in Convocation until June 2021, or wish to request a refund of your convocation fee (and will not participate in any convocation) please notify the Office of the Registrar at regservices@ocadu.ca by June 1, 2020.

You will have received a specific message about the Fourth Year Awards. These are proceeding and each program has designed criteria for jurying. We will announce winners in time for convocation.

Many of you are wondering about OCAD U’s plans for delivery of courses and opening of facilities for Fall 2020. President Diamond will provide some details around the University’s planning for Fall in her message to the community later today. We understand you need to make informed choices about the Fall and are working as quickly as we can to get you clear and accurate information in time for registration in July.

A reminder that students with outstanding fees, including tuition and student fees, AV, Studio and library fines, will not be able to register until the balance is paid in full.  For details, please refer to the Tuition & Fees web page.

The application process for the new Canada Emergency Student Benefit are scheduled to open May 15.  This fund supports post-secondary students and recent graduates who are unable to find work due to COVID-19.

Please continue to take care of yourselves and others close to you. Our student services are still operating during the campus closure and continue to be available to you whether you are registered this spring/summer or not.
