Syed Tariq Saeed, Drawing & Painting

Meet a 2021 Peer Mentor:

My name is Syed Tariq Saeed (he/him), and I will be attending fourth-year Drawing & Painting which is my major. I have been a Peer Mentor for three years now. I am currently residing in Mississauga. I would like to develop a body of work that interweaves the two cultures I associate myself with, the one in which I was born in the Eastern culture of Pakistan and the second that adopted me, the Western culture of Canada, and I think I have found a way to blend both these in my art.

As pandemic has affected every aspect of our lives, learning is no different, post-COVID; I feel some of the lecture courses will shift to online as it saves a lot of time in commuting, the test, maybe will be given in person in class. Work too will shift to home, as it makes no sense for the companies to pay astronomical rents in downtown Toronto for office spaces when they can pay a minimal amount to the employees and have them work from their own homes. The world has changed from what it was before March 2020, it’s just that we haven’t grasped how much.

"The Merciful" by Syed Tariq Saeed. Calligraphy in painting translates to"In the name of God, the most Merciful, the most Compassionate"

I am very excited about the future; I can’t wait to get back to school, human interaction… I never knew I would miss it so much until it was taken away from me. Being in the room with other artists, from any area of art—be it visual or performance, writer or sculpture—inspires me. It is safe to say that I would not have found my style of painting, had I not had interaction with other students at OCAD U.
