“My name is Ella Luiza Cölsmann (she/her), Izzy for short, and I was born and raised in Germany. I started attending OCAD U in the Environmental Design program in 2020 but recently switched to Visual & Critical Studies (VCS). I love to learn more and more about art historical events and periods every day. To me, it is fascinating to see how art reflects social changes and vice versa.
I love to create mixed media paintings using mainly acrylics, but I am hoping to experiment more in the future and expand my knowledge on sustainable and durable materials. My art deals with current issues and social developments, but also tells very personal stories. Besides creating art with my hands, I enjoy bringing people together and I am very passionate about transatlantic exchanges. I appreciate that OCAD U is so committed to creating a more open-minded future and I am eager to not just hope for a better future but help create it myself.
With all the challenges the pandemic has brought to every single one of us, I would encourage people to keep an open mind and accept people for who they are, as we all are unique and necessary. I am hopeful that the pandemic has taught many of us to appreciate things more and brought us closer to what really matters in life.
I see my personal future promoting the cultural and personal exchange between Europe and North America in a sustainable and welcoming way, with mutual respect and appreciation for each other. All the remote methods that have been established during the pandemic are most likely here to stay, but I am looking forward to a future in which we see those tools as a useful addition to traditional networking and interpersonal exchange and not as a replacement.”
