# Wearable Debt

We chose to represent our data using circles due to the multiple factors that they represent. Firstly, the circles represent the cycle of debt we will be in during our time in university. We will be receiving loans and spending the loans and this cycle will repeat itself for at least the next few years. There are multiple rings to represent the idea of spiraling deeper and deeper into debt. The larger outer circle is has clearly defined smaller circles while the inner rings become less defined while the third inner ring is just a single circle. The idea here is that at first, you can recognize the money you owe and the parts you spend it on. However, over time the accumulation of debt becomes less clear and becomes a large mass.

Ultimately, we decided to visualize our student debt by assigning it an RGB value. The outer ring represents our total debt while the inner ring represents debt by semester. In the code, the RBG values are inputted as RBG(x,y,z), where x y z are placeholders for a number from 0-255. We divided our debt in a way that it would fit into that scheme. For example, \$12,178 would be represented as RBG(01,21,78), and \$8163 would be represented as RBG(08,01,63). These values gave the inner and outer rings a unique gradient depending on our debt. The idea was intended to be satirical; the one thing all of us share in common, regardless of what we’re here for and how well we’re doing, is that we’ve paid a certain amount of money to the school.

The code itself creates an animation which would seem like an unlikely choice for a fixed tattoo, however it made the representation of colour more vibrant. The randomization of colour in the stroke makes for a flashing, strobe like effect the draws the eye. The variation in movement of the circles means that no individual screenshot will be exactly the same, since debt is also an ever changing and fluctuating.
