 Basic pressure sensor  and the advanced pressure sensor 

  • Description:

This pressure conductive switch is a simple pressure sensor that has been installed into the cotton fabric. The reason I create this piece is I would like to see what will happened if I use this material combine with another materials. Such as while I’m using the pressure sensitive materials, the interaction between two different materials will creates a unique feeling while you press the pressure material button. Although this is very simple to make, I’m also feel very happy to see the result. By the way, the combination of this simple sensor add with another advanced sensor material can make this looks much better.  The reason I made two sensors is because the material I received was too late, I don’t have enough time to make it better, and also I though the first basic pressure sensor is not satisfied for me.    

Materials for the basic pressure sensor 

  • Cotton sheet with different colours: orange, blue, green etc. 
  • Copper wire, conductive wire, cotton wire and cut copper pieces Arduino, circuit playground, wires, sub port. 

Tools & Techniques: List or describe all tools and techniques used to produce the swatch.  

 

The advanced pressure is made of: 

  • Cotton fabric 
  • Sewing 
  • Pressure material sheet
  • Conductive sheet 
  • Wire
  • plastic tape

The tools I used for both basic and advanced sensors are:  

  • a scissor to cut cotton sheets
  • needles for attaching cotton sheets and wires
  • A laptop for powering up LEDs and copper wire speakers; Arduino coding software to control the Arduino

Step 1 Fold the cotton fabric and shape it with a scissor

Construction stages of advanced pressure sensor switch

 

Step 1 cutting cotton materials and using sewing technique to make three cotton layers  and also attach the conductive materials .

Step 2 using the plastic tape paste two layers of pressure sensitive fabric underneath the  conductive sheet.

3 Fold the cotton fabric and connect the wire underneath the conductive sheet, also power the LED on AAA battery.

1 which developing software have you used?
2 is there any difficulties ?
3 if you have any things you want to change, or any things you want to make it better, what are they?
4 what do you think this AR idea will be developed in the future?(ex this can completely change the kids educational environment, or it won’t be become popular).
1. 3DS and Adobe Aero
2. Adobe Aero is less functional, and the final product didn’t achieve the results I originally wanted. I originally wanted to make a 3D POP Up book and then when the user clicks on an animal, there will be a separate page about the animal and some animal animations. But Adobe Aero doesn’t allow me to add any additional scenes or animations.
3. The only AR tools I know of are Adobe Aero and Reality Composer, RC is more comprehensive than Aero, but RC doesn’t allow importing my modeling. Maybe later I’ll find some better AR tools to improve this project, such as turning the whole piece into a 3d book, with individual pages for each animal and descriptions, animations.
4. I think this idea can be a good development for children’s education in the future. This idea can be more intuitive for children to receive education, children often do not have the patience like adults, something interesting and intuitive can be very good to attract their attention and let them learn more.
Final result

Conclusion: this is a very nice work I have ever seen, it looks very cool for kids, the whole environment is perfectly mixed with animals, the colour also looks peaceful, it also has sound when you touch each animals, and it will also direct to a video to watch. In my opinion, this AR digital kids book will be popular in the future.

Artist statement:

I was starting to think about what is life?  Can we define what life is? Can we create life?

It’s very hard to answer those questions, every person has their definition of life.

In my opinion, life is not just a creature showing on your face, life is a movement driven by energy. A chemical reaction is a living movement, a figure’s animation is a living movement, anything that makes people think it’s moving in a certain pattern is a lively movement.

My classmates Ryan and Kyle’s work inspired me that life can be a certain form or a pattern.

So, my work is based on the basic rule. I created an animation that looks like a new creature with different colours and different shapes flying like a bird into a dark sky.   The work was made on my iPad pro, which was not created by any coding software. I want to create it by my hand, I don’t want to make it too randomized and too complex.  Every frame has been drawing by my hand.

Rules

1 Find a blank space, you need to draw various triangles, the size can vary, the quantity is unlimited.  

2 You have to make sure those triangles can form as different shapes. 

3 You may not able to make too many random triangles, because that will be hard for you to make them organized. 

4 You have to fill the same colour, but you need to make a colour brightness gradient from the brightness to the darkness. Ex: Top to the bottom, the brightness goes down. 

5  Make different colours based on the same brightness role and combine them to create an animation.

Working process

step 1 

Using iPad pro sketchbook software to Create a symmetric figure with different sizes of triangles. This figure looks like a bird mixed with a snake,   it has two wings and a big forehead.

Step 2 

Adding more small triangles to illustrate small feathers falling from the wings. However, those small feathers have to be arranged as a triangular shape.

Step 3

Adding straight lines inside those two wings also creates different sizes of triangles.

Step 4

I filled a red colour into those triangles; each colour brightness is different;  the colour brightness has been decreasing due to the order; up to bottom, left to right on the left-wing; And the right to the left on the right-wing. Compare with Each colour brightness,  the difference should less than 10. Ex; The very bright colour red’s brightness is 100, the other red colour beside it should be less than 90.

Changing different colours but using the same brightness rule.

Step 6

Making an animation; combining different pictures with different colours and different wings positions; Each pair wing has been rotated in different angles. In order to make it looks more specific, here is the whole image that include multiple layers that stacking together.

Step 7

Create an animation by using procreate

Adding each layers, transform them into each frame. Using Animation Assist to create a ping-pong video; a video can be played forward and backwards.
