In collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, the Office of Graduate Studies, with support from the Office of the President, OCAD University, presents Tobia Scarpa: A Life in Architecture and Design. On the occasion of his first visit to Toronto, the celebrated Italian architect and designer will offer an overview of his long distinguished career.

In a career spanning five decades, Tobia Scarpa has designed buildings, glassware, and furniture. Educated at the School of Architecture at the University of Venice, Scarpa’s work has been characterized by a sensitivity to form and history, materiality, and what operates as a rigorous and intellectually progressive quest for enduring solutions to design problems. Among his many achievements are his Occhi vases for the Italian glassmaker Venini, introduced in 1956, his 1969 “Soriano Chair” (designed in the year he graduated from architecture school and for which he won a Compasso D’oro), and his landmark 1993 design for the headquarters of the Benetton Group in Castrette di Villorba near Treviso, Italy. Since 2002 Mr. Scarpa has served as a faculty member at the Art and Design Faculty of the Istituto Universitario di Architettura (IUAV) in Venice. The recipient of numerous prizes and accolades — including a 2008 award for lifetime achievement from the Compasso D’oro Foundation — Mr. Scarpa’s practice demonstrates the transformative power of critical creativity across time and place. Most recently — in 2013 — he completed a poetic, powerful and widely acclaimed renovation of Andrea Palladio’s Galleria dell’ Academia in Venice.
