Bio: Sowmya Somanath is finishing her PhD in the Interactions Lab in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Calgary. Her dissertation research focuses on developing tools for ‘making’ in challenging contexts – including at-risk youth, resource constraints, and cultural barriers to innovation. During her MSc and PhD, Sowmya also worked as a research intern with Xerox Research Lab in India, Smart Technologies in Calgary, and the HCI lab at the University of Manitoba. Her other interaction design projects include autonomous vehicle and pedestrian interaction, human-robot interaction on tabletops, visualizations for exploring 3D reservoir data, visualizations for communicating simple statistics to business audiences, and an educational physical user interface for reservoir engineering.
