Concours Jeunes critiques 2021

We are thrilled to announce the winner of this year’s Young Critics Competition, Marie-Hélène Toutant-Gauthier, for her review of the exhibition Lorenza Böttner: Requiem for the Norm (Art Museum at the University of Toronto), published in Esse 100, Futurity.

We also wish to highlight the text of the finalist, Nina Fereiro, on Hito Steyerl’s exhibition This Is The Future (Art Gallery of Ontario), available online.

This critical writing competition is opened to young writers registered in Canadian undergraduate university studies or university master’s candidates. The 2021 contest is now open!

This is the Future: Understanding Chaos in Fluidity
“[Hito] Steyerl does not necessarily make any predictions or depictions of the future, but she does depict a futuristic present that was once science-fiction, non-existent then carved out by human and earthly forces. She brings time together fluidly, showing previous and subsequent effects on the present, and with the title of the show states that we are no longer waiting for the future, we are living it.”
