Work at Fathom

We love deeply complicated projects that take the intimate knowledge of a domain expert and make it accessible to a much wider audience. Over the past eight years, we’ve worked with large corporationssmaller non-profitsgovernment agencies, and nearby universities. We do projects about issues we care about, like gender equalitydevelopmenteducationpublic health, and public transportation. We build tools for scientists and help them address issues like Ebola, Lassa fever, and malaria.

We geek out about musicpitchcolor perception, and the digits of pi and tau. Our side projects feed our curiosities, occasionally putting our obsessions on public display. Even though we work in code and most of our projects are interactive, our traditional design training means we still really love print. We also use it as a means to support causes we think are important.

And even though “design” is part of our company’s name, we’re a little preoccupied with math and work on large software projects. In fact, a considerable amount of our time is spent on enabling others to learn to code or create interactive and visual things.

Below we’ve listed specific job openings, though it’s worth noting that many team members define their own positions. If your background and interests align with our work, we would love to hear from you!

Visual Designer

Our designers work with a broad range of media to create useful artifacts out of messy information. As a designer, you’ll compose interfaces for exploring information, data-driven stories, and large-scale visualizations.

We’re most excited about candidates who demonstrate the ability to balance complexity with clarity and can effectively communicate information to different audiences.

Developer

Our development team comprises hybrid folks that wear many technical hats. As a developer you’ll parse and evaluate complicated datasets, churn out iterations of prototypes, tools, and interactive pieces, and optimize user experience across devices.

We’re particularly interested if you have experience with front-end web development (building applications in HTML/CSS/JavaScript from scratch), or native development (C++), or somewhere in between (Java). Bonus points for experience with Amazon’s platforms (EC2, S3, etc) for deployment, back-end web development (Python and Flask in particular), graphics, statistics/machine learning, or even mobile development.

Product Manager/Owner

As a product manager/owner, you’ll drive the development and launch of our new products. This includes managing the roadmap and milestones, creating presentation materials, supervising or conducting research and user testing, developing strategy (from marketing to pricing), and working closely with the design and development team to build and launch unique and impactful data-driven products.

An ideal candidate for this role has experience shipping products within a studio setting or software development organization.

Project Manager

We’re searching for someone who can coordinate complex projects, keep an eye on schedules, and be a point of contact along the way — both for external clients and internal product development efforts. In this role, you’ll write proposals and work closely with internal and external teams on a daily basis to guide projects through to launch.

All candidates should be self-starters and excellent written and verbal communicators. An ideal candidate for this role has experience within a studio setting or in a software development organization, and will be able to pick up our process quickly and improve it further as we continue to grow.

Writers & Researchers

We’re looking for storytellers with a passion for finding narratives in data. This role requires experience hunting down trends in complex data sets, conducting contextual research on a variety of topics, simplifying information and outlining how it can transfer to an interactive environment, and writing copy for digital and print settings.

We’re especially interested in people who also have experience in project management, copy editing, statistics, or accommodating stories for different environments (blogs, podcasts, marketing materials, and so on).

Internships

We are always on the lookout for interns who are curious self-starters interested in extending their skills in design, development, stats, research, storytelling, and related fields. A strong sense of initiative is a must, as our interns often direct their own projects, while also receiving regular feedback and guidance from members of the Fathom team.

While most interns are here during the summer, we’re also open to students joining us during the fall or spring.

Send your résumé, cover letter, and links to pertinent work to hello@fathom.info.

In your cover letter, we’d love to hear about why you’re interested in working at Fathom, what you might add to the team, and how your background influences your work.
