In the headlights
“15 new paintings, featuring abstract fields of splattered colour marked by a visual image of a saying I was haunted by for years, and in middle age, before I moved into old age, haunted further by a now deceased loved one who described himself to me as ‘a courtesan caught in the headlights.’” – David Bateman
David has a long-standing reputation as a poet and artist and deep connections to the Peterborough and Toronto communities, particularly around spaces such as Buddies in Bad Times.
His work over the last three decades has been around queer performance and identity and is a white artist who spent a lot of time paying attention to critical race theory. He has also been instrumental in assisting grad studies over the past several years.
