The McGill Music Graduate Students’ Society (MGSS) is pleased to announce its 34th annual Symposium, to be held March 18–20, 2022, at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music in Montréal, Canada.
Our research keynote, Emily Abrams Ansari, is a specialist in music, politics, national identity, race, and protest song. An Associate Professor of Music History at Western University, Ontario, she has written extensively on American composers and the Cold War, including in her 2018 book The Sound of a Superpower: Musical Americanism and the Cold War. Professor Ansari will speak about her recent research on song in El Salvador, part of an interdisciplinary group project on memory and civil war.
Our performance keynote, Jonathon Adams, is an Indigenous (Cree-Métis) baritone and early music specialist. They have given soloist performances with numerous ensembles across Canada, the US, and Europe. In 2020 Adams featured in Against the Grain Theatre and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s film MESSIAH / COMPLEX and they were recently named the first artist-in-residence at Early Music Vancouver. Their performance project nipahimiw, created with Susie Napper and Catalina Vicens, will premiere in 2022.
We invite proposals of 300 words on all topics relating to musical practice and culture from all fields, including but not limited to musicology, ethnomusicology, music education, music theory, performance studies, composition, music technology, sound recording, and music psychology. Presentations in the format of twenty-minute papers or thirty-minute lecture recitals are welcome and will be followed by a ten-minute Q&A. proposals and presentations may be in either English or French. We can only accept one proposal per person and from scholars who have not yet received their Ph.D.
The Symposium will be held in-person with limited slots available for presentations to be conducted via Zoom. We have travel bursaries available (in Canadian dollars) for which attendees can apply through the submission form. Please note that we may not be able to offer the full amount requested—we therefore strongly encourage attendees to apply for travel funding from their own institution, if available.
