Congratulations to Ursula Handleigh for being accepted into NSCAD University’s MFA program!

Ursula is a visual artist based in Toronto and a graduate of OCAD University’s BFA program. Working with experimental photography, film and historical processes of imaging making, her work explores questions of identity, perception, memory and familial relationships. Ursula has participate in the XPACE/SPARK Art Space Residency in Syracuse, New York, the M.C. McCain Post-Graduate Residency in Toronto, Ontario and the Spark Box Residency in Prince Edward County, Ontario. Her work has been exhibited across Canada, the United States and Europe.

We are very proud and excited that OCAD U will be hosting a project called The Swing Lounge at the Pride Street Fair in the Church-Wellesley Village June 26th, 27th and 28th.

Conceived and built by OCAD U students and recent alumni The Swing Lounge is unlike conventional booths in the Pride Street Fair. The Swing Lounge invites participants into a 10’x10’ installation space to engage with stories and experiences representing the diverse voices of members of LGBTQQI2SA communities at OCAD U. The installation is being constructed by Alumni & Students Nelly Goodarzi, Sayyad Glassford and Rouzbeh Akhbari.

We would warmly welcome your involvement in this:

  1. Volunteer at the Booth over Pride weekend

Join our team to welcome Pride Street Fair guests into our space and share your experiences about Pride and OCAD U. Drop by for an hour or swing with us for a whole day! We’ll provide you with an OCAD U t-shirt, keep you hydrated and make sure you have a lot of fun. Email OCADUPride2015@gmail.com if you would like to join our team of OCAD U Pride 2015 volunteers.

  1. Share a written piece or audio clip and have your story shared at Pride 2015.

We have tried to make it as easy as possible – and simply ask individuals to send an email with a copy of what they hope to share.  If you are not able to record the clip yourself, just send it written out and we will contact you shortly to arrange a time to record, or to narrate it for you. You can also directly email us and we will work something out to make sure you can be included.  Official Call for Submissions with description: www.ocadu.ca/pride2015.

Jennifer Long is an artist, curator and educator holding a BAA from Ryerson University and a MFA from York University. For the past fifteen years, her artistic practice has explored issues of doubt, vulnerability, perceived ideals, and communication, within the context of interpersonal relationships.  This photographic work uses constructed narratives to describe the emotions and quiet moments of everyday life.  Long’s artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally and been published in numerous Canadian and European books and magazines. Long has been the recipient of grants from the Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council, and The Canada Council for The Arts and is currently working at OCAD University as an Assistant Professor and the Associate Chair of Cross-Disciplinary Art Practices.

 We, The Heartland is a love letter to the cultural landscape of the prairies. Photographs made along the proposed Keystone XL pipeline route in Nebraska and South Dakota are paired with handwritten letters from local residents to President Obama. The exhibition addresses the cultural complexity found in the heartland, and the unseen threat the proposed pipeline poses to the land.

We, the Heartland, will be on view until July 3.
