Join us for a timely and compelling conversation about Assemble’s enterprising strategies, alternative approaches to building, and spatial tactics for social activism.

Panelists include: Fran Edgerley and Paloma Strelitz (Assemble); William Menking (Editor-in-Chief, The Architect’s Newspaper), Michael Meredith (Partner, MOS Architects), Esther Choi (Assistant Professor, OCAD University), Martino Stierli (The Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design, MoMA), and Sean Anderson (Associate Curator of Architecture and Design, MoMA).

As the deity of foxes as well as agriculture, fertility, prosperity and success, Inari shrines are important Shinto sites which are found throughout Japan. This particular shrine is part of the Otoyo-jinja which is dedicated to various animal deities especially mice. The shrine is located on the eastern ridge overlooking Kyoto among the shrines and temples found along the Philosopher’s Walk. Not seen in this view are the beautiful stone animal carvings which ank the individual shrines.

This photograph was made when leading a group of OCAD U students to Japan for an exhibition at the Osaka University of Arts.

Peter has taught photography at OCAD since 1976 during which time he has also taken on a number of roles in Faculty of Art including Acting Dean of Faculty of Art, Chair of Photography and of Cross-Disciplinary Art Practices, as well as a Co-ordinator for the Florence Off-Campus Studies Program for multiple sessions.

He is currently the Chair of the Mobility Exchange/Advisory Committee and is leading the development of the International Art Collaborations network (INTAC).

A founding member of Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography, Peter carries on an active practice in both photography and book arts which encompasses film-based and digital. View more of Peter’s artwork on LensCulture.

Patience, observation, performance; In Rise and Fall I study and intervene with light, architecture, and lens.  Through occupying these spaces, my intention was to create still photographs rooted in duration.  These works manifest themselves through both the performativity of light and the performativity of the figure – each treated as equal subjects.  The selection process for the environments photographed was done after spending much time in each physical space, watching and experiencing distinctive change to the quality of light at various periods of the day and night.  Within these considered spaces, performances where enacted as a response with the intention to echo the type of affect and physical charge each space conjured.  By embodying these spaces for the lens, I create works that reflect the psychological nature between presence and absence. This is realized through the representation of what the light reveals in the frame, what darkness obscures, and by how much the figure wittingly divulges for us.

Nicholas maintains an active art practice both independently and collaboratively. His interests integrate performance, cinema, installation and large format still photography.

Simon Glass, Sunset, Metzuqeh Dragot Giclée print, artist’s proof 2008, 24” x 30” Courtesy of the artist Estimate: $1,600

This photograph was taken in 2008 at the edge of the Judean Desert. It was inspired by a short text from
the Book of Jeremiah in which the prophet sees birds eeing and the skies darkening. The lighter sections of the image were shot about 20 minutes before sunset, and the darker section about 20 minutes after sunset.

In his artistic practice, archival and original photographic imagery is combined with mystical, biblical and liturgical Hebrew. Recently, his work has gravitated toward installation and examines prophecy in the context of the possibilities and impossibilities of translation, the philosophy of language and the conflation of future and past.

Simon is currently an Artist in Residence at the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies at the University of Toronto.

Courtesy of the artist. Estimate: $2,000

Jennifer Long’s interest in the experiences of women, and the limited representations in which they are depicted, spurs her practice and forms a lineage from her earliest work through to her current series, Intertwine. Long’s artistic practice explores issues of doubt, vulnerability, perceived ideals, and communication within the context of interpersonal relationships.

These lens-based works draw inspiration from the quiet moments and rituals of everyday life. The resulting artworks deal with themes ranging from community to motherhood from a Feminist perspective. Intertwine expands her interest in themes of family and acknowledging the multitude of experiences within parenting.

“For the past fifteen years, my artistic practice has explored issues of doubt, vulnerability, perceived ideals, and communication within the context of interpersonal relationships.  Working with constructed narratives and a Feminist lens I describe the emotions and quiet moments of everyday life.  Touch, gesture and gaze all play significant roles as conduits of conscious and unconscious modes of communication.”
