Sexy or modest, sometimes chosen with a theme in mind, and, occasionally outlandish, wedding shoes are the exclamation point in a well-crafted statement of style and individuality. Ron Wood’s portraits of wedding shoes are about love and friendship, old customs and new ones, and, of course, beauty.

As a photographer for The Bata Shoe Museum, Ron has photographed many of the museum’s historical collections. Now, in A Beautiful Step Forward: Wedding Shoe Portraits, he explores the significance of wedding shoes in contemporary culture

Timeraiser and OCAD University have come together to help support emerging artists, non-profit organizations, and promote civic engagement!  Timeraiser is a volunteer matching fair, a silent art auction, and a night out on the town. The big Timeraiser twist is rather than bid money on artwork, participants bid volunteer hours. 

Come out to the Power Plant on May 30th to celebrate the 29 artists selected for this opportunity to bid your volunteer hours on stunning artworks!  Tickets for this event are $20.

Throughout the evening, participants meet with various non-profit organizations in the room to find available skilled volunteer opportunities that meet their needs. Once matches are made, the bidding can begin. Winning bidders have 12 months to complete their pledge in order to bring the artwork home as a reminder of their goodwill.

Tickets are now on sale for SNAP!’s annual photography auction.  There will be lots of amazing work, including Jonathan Groeneweg‘s piece which was selected as Best Documentary!

SNAP! is ACT’s  (AIDS Committee of Toronto)  annual photographic fundraiser featuring a live auction of art, a silent auction, and a photo competition.

In previous years, the event has drawn over 700 guests, providing patrons with an opportunity to support ACT’s programs and services, increase their awareness of HIV/AIDS, and add to their art collections. The event provides a great opportunity for both established and emerging artists to showcase their work.

SNAP! is now entering its second decade, and has raised over $2.3 million since its inception in support of the important programs and services at ACT.

This is your opportunity to preview the exciting SNAP! 2015 Live Auction collection of works from renowned and emerging artists from Canada and around the world. The winning photos from the SNAP! Photo Competition will also be on display.

Kotama Bouabane: Project 31

Your Photography Faculty supports OCAD University’s Project 31  auction. Over the past five years, this event has been a tremendous success, raising over $400,000 for OCAD University projects and programs, including student scholarships, awards and bursaries, program materials and equipment, and much more.

Over the month of March we will showcase the artworks being donated by OCAD U Photo faculty and alumni.  First up is alumni and faculty, Kotama Bouabane!  Kotama will be directing the money raised from the sale of his print to 4th year Photography Awards.

The Project 31 auction will take place at OCAD U on March 26, 2015 and will be a ticketed fundraising event. Work will be on view in the Great Hall as of Monday, March 23rd. But if you are at the school on the evening of the event you can view the auction from the main elevators over looking the great hall with the auction running 7:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.

Wed, Feb 25th at 12 noon is the final deadline for Timeraiser!  Last year 3 OCAD U students were selected from the applications.  This means they were paid for their artwork, they had their images on display at the Powerplant, their CV was expanded and they received some great press!  Not to mention that their artwork helped to raise volunteer hours for non-profit organizations!

With online harassment increasingly becoming a reality for feminist thought on the Internet, Fake Geek Girls Like Us creates a safe space for women to freely speak their minds. Many people interested in nerd/geek/fan culture feel isolated behind their computers and this website creates an online community for sharing ideas, videos, news, and art. Weekly themes of the week facilitate the discussion around issues of female representation in geek/nerd/fan culture where there is no wrong answer. Fake Geek Girls Like Us aims to connect feminists and like-minded thinkers online in the conversation of femme fan culture.

Tech Talk: DIY Lighting

Many students, if not all, struggle with finances. Photography is not a cheap profession and more often than not a student can find themselves lacking the equipment they need to make great images. Check out this list of DIY lighting projects for some great ideas on making your own equipment with little to no budget required – including a personal favourite: Diffusing light with a trash bag.

The Strobist is a world renowned blog for off camera flash and other lighting tips and tricks. Be sure to check out the rest of the site and learn some great new things! Your wallet will be thanking you later, and the images you’ll get will be well worth it!

We are thrilled to announce that OCAD U will again partner with TIMERAISER to support artists, nonprofits and collectors!

 This is an amazing opportunity open to all emerging artists!  If you are a current student, you can submit to the special OCAD U student category (you will be prompted to indicate if your student status as you move through the general application process).  From the work submitted to the student category, a minimum of one artwork will be purchased by TIMERAISER.  (Last year 3 winners were selected:  Ting Fang,  Lauren Vaile, and Carlie Woodworth!)  

DEADLINES:  

Open Call: Feb 20th, 2015
Student Call: Feb 25th, 2015

TIMERAISER 101:

TIMERAISER buys the artwork from the selected artists.
The public “buys” the artwork with volunteer hours.
Nonprofits get volunteers.
